i´m planning to put a holley 2300 (direct bolt) or 3 1bbl holley carbs on the log head. which is the best option?? i have a 170.
the 3x1 all open at the same time? i´ll put a hot cam, more compression, and the headers i already have.
i´m not a daily driver, i use the car only at weekends but i want more power at middle and high rpm.
bye

the others will tell you specifics, but if you want the power then you want 3X1.

Hi,

This is a topic with two sides clearly drawn. It seems that for tunability and tune and forget the Holley direct mount is the best option. Some say that the 3x1 creates more top end but some protest.

How about 2x2. A weber 32/32 direct mounted between 1 and 3 and one direct mounted between 4 and 6? They flow 215 CFM and are progressive so you would only be operating on two until you kick it.

I don't think you will get 1 clear answer on this one. Every body has an opinion.

I think part of it depends on the year of the cylinder head you plan on modifying. An early head with the small log would benifit more from the Offy as the smaller intake tract volume would restrict the flow from the 2 bbl. Well, that and I don't know if it's even possible to direct mount a 2bbl onto the smaller log. If you are modifying a later head, then it comes down to your personal preference.

I posted this same question, search for a post on 3x1 vs 2V. In the end after all of the much appreciated and expert advice had been given, I decided on the 3x1. I think it has a slight advantage in flow, but mainly because I want to attract more attention then the run-of-the-mill V8 parked next to me at a cruise night.

The 2x2 Webers are what I currently have on my stocker. However, they are funneled through an adapter (2-1) simply because I don't how they would react when totally engaged. The turbulance created whenever the secondaries open could cause a flat spot (I think). With a funnel, I would think most of the fuel/air mixture would smooth out before entering the log. I think X posted a comment once about this very setup.

By-the-way, this is a very smooth and responsive setup! :D

the 170 has the small log but but i like to put a 221 head (i´m from argentina), that will create more power?
3x1 the only problem (for me) is the linkage, is hard to do? progressive o simultaneous? here is easy to find those holley 36mm 1 bbl carbs and parts, there are everywhere.

thanks to all for your help.

the larger log will most definitely help power, it'll let more air and fuel in, and allow a larger carb
it also should have larger valves which will help, i don't know though because i'm not that familiar with them

yes, the 221 head has bigger valves, i make my choice, 3 holleys i think will be better considering the cam and the head job, also i need to uprade the distributor because it has vaccum advance only.

but i still wonder about the linkage, what do you guys think: proggressive or simultaneous?

Progressive, run off center carb and have the outer ones open at 2/3rd's throttle.

Bob

thanks for the help guys, but is hard to tune the progressive tri carb setup? should i need a vacuum gauge to make things easier?

hard is really a relative term...
the initial setup might be somewhat difficult, but after that it should be just check-up stuff to make sure it's running right
