ignition coil stance

I remember reading somewhere on the forums about the positioning of the ignition coil and its effects on the engine. I've searched and couldn't find it. My setup is Pertronix II with a FlameThrower coil. I thought I read that having the coil straight up and down was better than the factory tilt. I'm I remembering this correctly?

I have mine in the stock location with the stock tilt. I also am running Pertronix II. Works fine. I don't see how the position of the coil can affect performance. :?: It could be mounted upside down, and will perform the same way. The only issue I am aware of is heat related. There have been people who have relocated the coil to the fenderwell because of the heat generated by the engine. I hope this helps.

Good Luck

Mine runs at a tilt too, uhh- well it will again (I repainted my engine too), with the Flamethrower.

HELLO BARISHIMAN

..... I HAD A 1962 FALCON AND IT CAME WITH TWO HOLES, AND TWO NUT ON THE BACKSIDE, INTO THE SHOCK TOWER. I ASKED FORD ABOUT IT AND THEY SAID FORD PUT THE COIL ON THE SHOCKTOWER IN HOT AREAS. THIS WAS TO HAVE THE COIL RUN COOLER. I HAVE ALWAY PUT MY COIL THERE SINCE. IT JUST TAKES KNOCKING OUT THE HOLE IF YOU HAVE THEM OR DRILLING TWO HOLES, AND A LITTLE LONGER COIL WIRES.

.....YOU DON'T NEED TO HAVE THE COIL GET HOTTER FROM THE MOTOR. WHAT YOU WANT IS THE COIL TO RUN AS COOL AS IT CAN. THE COOLER THE COIL....., THE HOTTER SPARK YOU WILL BE GETTING AT THE SPARKPLUG.

......THIS DIDN'T COME ON ALL MODELS, BUT IF FORD THOUGHT IT A GOOD IDEA THEN THAT'S WHERE THEY WOULD HAVE PUT THE COIL.

......HOPE THIS WILL WORK FOR YOU. LOTS OF LUCK.....LOL

Andrew,
I am also running the pertronix with the 40,000 volt flame thrower coil - mine is at the factory tilt on the factory mounts and I have never had any problems. I am no expert, and I have never heard about different positions effecting performance, but from an ignorant opionion... I can't think of any possible effect moving the coil from angled to straight would have...

If you mount it with the terminals facing down, the electricity will run out of it better..... :D :D :D

My grandmother, who passed away in 1969, didn't get electricity or running water in her cabin until 1966. After the house was wired, she was afraid that electricity would leak out of the unused sockets and onto the floor hwere it would electrocute someone.......

But If you're in Australia you are already upside down so would the coil need to upside down too? What about a rice grinder, are they slanted?

On a serious note... The Bosch coils that came stock with the electronic ignition systems on crossflows, there is a breather near the top. Tip it too far off vertical, and the cooling oil can run out. There may be similar issues with other brands. Don't Accel mention this on their Super Coil install blurb?

I ship these with the breather taped and urethaned closed.

:) So, some coils do need to run upright!

Adam.
