Ignition resistor wire

Does a 1965 Mustang have a resistor wire built into the ignition wire harness? I am switching to DSII and the instructions say that the ignition wire needs to be resisted down to 8 volts. I intend to test it, of course, but I also read that most Fords have a resistor wire built in.

Thanks

Harry

It should begin just a few inches from the ignition switch. Look for a bullet connector with the pink wire coming off it.

I thought that the DSII with a HV coil would take full voltage and that the pink resistor wire should be disconnected.

Well, that's what I thought too, but the directions that came with the DSII conversion harness from NPD mentioned the resistor, said to check for 8v, and the harness even has a built in connector to insert a resistor.

I'd be much happier if it doesn't need one!

I was all ready to head to the junkyard to salvage a DSII setup. What items did you get from NPD? Thanks.

NPD has the HV coil $41.95, the conversion harness $113.95, and the ignition module $104.95. I bought the coil and harness from them. I got the igniton module from Auto Zone $25. I got the reman distributor $52, the cap $7, and the lower part of the cap (the adapter) for $11, the 8mm wire set $32, the rotor and the Mr. Gasket #925d recurve kit all from Advance Auto Parts. I bought for a "1978 Fairmont" application. It ain't cheap like a junk yard, but here in this part Ohio there just arn't any late seventies six cylinder Ford cars that still have the engine stuff intact to salvage (I looked in 10 salvage yards, after reading the 'sticky'). Besides, I know the new stuff is good and will work.

The stuff all fits, looks like OEM 1978 vintage, and hopefully will be easy to set up! The distributor body fits right into the dist hole and needed no sanding or modification to fit the hole.

yeah, that 8 volts is likely for a stock coil. it's not too late to send back that harness, return the module and use a msd6 as a stand-alone.

MSD6 to dsII:

12 volts and ground to the msd.
2 wires off of the dist. to the msd.
2 wires from the msd to the coil.

Easy :D

The conversion harness carries a brand name of TP performance. It is the complete connection harness that runs between the distributor, the ignition module, the coil hookup and the red and white wire that hooks to the ignition 'on' and the 'start' wires. It is nicely done, all taped, correct OEM style connections, and new. I don't think it was worth $113.95 but it is quick and easy and takes the guess work out of the wiring.

That being said, the instructions are vague, and that resistor connection is on the red wire just before the coil clip. Since the coil is a high energy coil I would suppose it wants 12v. The drawing does show 12v going to the coil. Perhaps it is saying that I should check for 8v and bypass the resistor wire. NPD doesn't mention a resistor, and if it needed one I bet they'd sell it. (2008 NPD catalog page 149)

This evening I will look for a TP performance web site and see if it says anything.

I coulda' used MSD, and if none of this works I just might. I haven't used MSD in years but I did back in the day. Then I'd be a real hottrodder!

Well, you have certainly found a way to make the DSII upgrade as expensive as possible.

I hope that it all works out for you.

Aye, you're right about that. The closest to a salvage yard find was an engine that still had the distributor. The yard owner would only sell it if I bought the whole engine! The wires were cut and the module gone, the coil looking like a war relic. Seems like either the wrecks that were still around either had a picked over V8 or no engine at all. With all the rain this last week (day after day) I just got tired of sloshing around in the mud. Guess all the good stuff was stolen from these cars long ago.

Harry check this out it might save a few bucks . I know NPD takes returns . Al

I'm not trying to rub it in, just help others and possibly you out in the future.

I used no junkyard parts in my DSII install, and it cost me less than $100. Now, I had to make my own "harness" but it consisted of two wires. I felt like I could handle that...

I've since replaced the GM module w/ an MSD, but only because I had it on hand.

Well, aside from the wire harness, this DSII wasn't all that expensive. The distributor was $52, the ign module $25 and the coil $41. I thought that was pretty reasonable, especially considering that Moyers in Crestline wanted $75 just for the junk distributor! Cap, rotor, plugs and wires would have to be purchased in either case just to have a good 'tune up'.

Redburd mentioned the $22 connector from Duralast. Considering I'd need three, plus a coil clip, and the wire, I guess $113 for a whole new harness isn't that far off, but the next time I see one in a junk yard somewhere I'll quietly acquire it and save it for the future.

Of course, Grocery Getter, a scrounged harness from a Sacramento area yard might be just the thing! Here in Ohio they still drive late 70's cars...so not as many in the scrap yards  . These guys need the parts for 'em and are too poor to buy them, so they ravage the yards.

frogmn666 posted his list of parts here http://fordsix.com/forum/viewtopic.php? ... c&start=50

bort, I thought I saw your list in another post, but can't find it, do you have a retail parts list for the duraspark conversion? thanks.

I Posted it once, I'm not sure if I have it here...

I thought about re-selling all this crap as a kit once because I saw so many people spending way too much on junkyard parts, but I decided not to 'cause I'm too lazy :)

But there it is, that is EVERYTHING you need. It is up to you, however, to figure out how to connect the two wires ;)
