Hey guys,

i have just about had it with the falcon. The truck and the stang were never this much trouble. Well heres my problem hope you uys can help.. i set the timing on my motor to 12 degrees. my idle is at 1200 in a none drive gear. the car runs okay but sounds realy grumpy the motor dies and will not restart. FInally i decide to kick the timing up a bit to 18 and it fires and runs put it into drive it dies. restart it i am only getting 14lbs of vacume. I called pony thinking it was carb problem we diognose it and indeed it is not a carburetor problem. My question is why is my ride doing this to me it has a new carb new points condenser set the dwell (petronix cause of this same issue) wires plugs and Coil. Its a brand new motor and all my problems started at hot august nights this year when the petronix unit went out. IO changed out every vacume line the transmission modulator the vacume advance the you name it i did it cost was not an opption. on this motor i kept stock mostly. i am out of ideas and i am ready to say goodbye to it cause no matter what i do it wont run right. i need some advice Carson carburetor and ignition says they think it is a POS because it was not responding correctly to anything they did, when i took it into them. hope you guys can help

keep sixin

Is your MSD box still hooked up?
You might try a new condenser. They sometimes are bad right out of the box. That might explain the problems on a restart. You might also want to bypass the MSD box just to see if it is a culprit on the restarts.

Unless you have some bad valves, your timing could be the cause of your low engine vacuum.

HI WES
First off your idle shouldn't be 1,200 thats way to fast unless you got some bad a## motor and cam... it should be around 600 to 700rpm.. With the idle at 1200 you timming is going to be way off. I am suprised that pony didn't catch that..
Bring you idle down to 600
set the timming @ 12 ( the timming I'm not exactiualy sure of the deg.) vaccum line un-hooked and pluged to set the timming.
and readjust the carb air/fuel mixture.

Yup, at 1200 rpm the centrifugal advance may well be coming on so you would have to retard the timing several degrees to get to where you think it belongs. Plus your throttle plate is probably hanging open too far which is causing the low vacuum reading. As Tim noted, the carb will need re-adjusted. If this doesn't help then it's time to take a compression check and verify valve timing. Good luck.

see..dont sell it...ask here!!!

we (they) can advise about anything....

Wes, Why do you have your idle that high? What camshaft do you have & what are the specs?
Let me know what you have & then it should be a breeze to get you straightened out. Advise william

Called pony today and they said my idle in park or neutral should be around 1100 rpm and when i put it into drive/reverse around 650. Right now i am running the stock Carter Y/F i bought a few mounths ago for my stock shows. its an Isky Cam in this current block the specs for the cam are here: Isky 256 super cam RPM range is 2000 to 5500 RPM valve lift int. ext. .445 vavle lash .0 Adv duration is 262 .50 durration int. ex. 208 and lobe center is 109. Basiclly brand new motor. all my problems started during hot august nights this last year when my petronix went out. the cam is in great shape took it to Enginw Dynamics Inc. to let them have a looksy at the cam they said its perfect looks almost new. we did some calculatons and the carter is fine to run it around town on of course im loosing power potential. I hope this helps guys thanks so much

So, that's a dual advance '67 distributor? And you set the timing with the vacuum line from the carb plugged closed? A problem area I can see is with the advance curve. It may not be correct due to internal wear, or incorrect due to the changed cam specs. Another potential issue with the changed cam is that maybe the idle speed required is appreciably higher than stock. This could cause the converter to want to lock up while stopped in gear.

Adam.

I, too am running an Isky cam and the pertronix unit. My pertronix took a dive on me last week and I am running points again. See in a lot of cases you have to tune the motor to the pertronix unit. If you put the points back in, you are going to have to start from scratch and re-tune the motor. I will be getting my new pertronix unit in a week or two, and I'll put it in as soon as I can. I didn't readjust my timing and the car is running a little rough (grumpy). I am sure when I put the pertronix back in, it'll smooth out some.
Good luck and please stick with it.

hey guys got some good news and some bad news..

well i had today off so i deceided to go rip into the falcon and findout whats wrong. i had a dream last night that told me to check the timing chain and gear. i listend to it and i dunno what the hell it was that told me to but thats what i believe my problem is. The timing chain has alot of slack in it and well i know its not right my guess is it jumped timing witch is causeing al these problems but im not sure completly. I ordered a new one from jegs today and hopefully it will work out and it didnt cause any internal problems. hopefully this is the end of my timeing and ignition problems. let me know what you guys think

I know how dreams can tell you when something is wrong. I think it's really the mind working while the body rests.
I got called to work on a all-terain forklift in the middle of the night. It was leaking hydraulic fluid from the back up pump which is located just below the reservoir. I didn't think about it at the time and since it wasn't on the flightline or blocking any aircraft, I decided to let it go till the morning. I went back to my room and went back to sleep. I had a dream about the hydraulics on that forklift and in my dream came to the conclusion that that reservoir was going to gravity drain through the backup pump. I woke up, threw on my close and drove out to the forklift. My dream was right and I had about 30 gallons of hydraulic oil on the ground. I had a fun time cleaning that up at 3 AM.
In other words, it very well could be that your timing chain jumped a tooth or two and is causing your timing to be way off. Have it checked out if you can. Your mind may be telling you someting.....

Hey Wes, if it's not too late now, you could try one of Mike's timing sets. They're multi-keyway, so you can make up for offset ground cams, or play with valve timing.

I've seen (and owned) some sloppy timing chains, but yet to see one actually jump teeth.

Regards, Adam.
