installing export brace

Regarding installing an aftermarket export brace on a 66 coupe, I assume the two stock braces that are bolted to the firewall and tack welded to the shock tower are to be removed? Is that correct? Any other advice regarding installation would be appreciated also. Thanks.
 
i remember reading some where that you should put your car up on jack stands over night before installing it, is this true?

When I installed my brace, the right tower moved about 1/4". In alignment terms, that's a lot. I'm certain you'll find the tower tops have bent in some. That's par for these old cars.
I'd suggest jacking the car up by the round frame brace under the engine, and leave it overnight. To install the brace, you must loosen the fender attachment bolts, then carefully use a bottle jack, a lenght of pipe, and 2"x4" blocks to gently spread the towers apart, until the brace drops over the shock tower bolts. Use a long drift punch or big screwdriver to line up the rear firewall bolt holes. Line up the fenders, and tighten the bolts. Get a front end alignment. The results are amazing, as fore-aft flexing is also greatly reduced.

i didnt have to do any of that spreading stuff. I did jack up my car the night before and then we jacked it up just on the front and i sat as far foward on the car as i could to bend it apart be we had problems fitting it from the fire wall to the shock towers!
