later head, offy intake?

I bought the offy-5970 intake to match my head which has a casting number of D8BE-6090-BA which translates to a head for a 1975-80 250ci. I have a 200ci block and bought a re manufactured, later year head for the increased flow. There is no way these parts are supposed to go together. there is a huge gap in the center. Has anyone else run into this problem? it looks like a carb spacer would go perfect but i havent seen anything about that online. the log is pretty much flat all the way across which you can compare to the image of the intake manifold below.

also, i saw an install guide for the earlier model of offy and head but not the later. has anyone seen one?

i would put pictures up but i cant figure it out...

We have the same setup, 78 head, exact same Offy, and had the same problems. The 78 log isn't hex and it isn't flat- kind of oval. Offy's instructions are close to useless. You will need to make some shims for the tripower to work on that head, as well as mill the head flat at the three locations for carb ports. We had a good machinist do this, way past our capabilities. He'll have to be careful he doesn't mill off too much either, or the screw holes that hold the head on will be thin to hold. Lots of gaskets to make, lots of potential for vacuum leaks too. Look here

at the pictures of our build and see the fourth pic down and you can see the shims.

If you want close-ups, we could take some. Its possible, maybe, that we have a picture somewhere of the build that shows the shims before assembly- I'll have to do some hunting.

The good news- it all worked out, it runs and looks great.

Howdy,

You may have either one of these heads in 1978 D8 head.

It is a "hex" on the right side and a flat-top on the left. The Offy manifold will need some "adapting" to fit the "hex" log... just as Schmuck,,, is telling you.

Or trade your hex-log head for a "flat-top" log.

Either log will require some machining.

Good Luck

I remember reading, I think on here, that someone machined their head then mixed up a batch of JB Weld, put it in place, and put saran wrap or similar over it then bolted down head while JB Weld was still soft and waited for it to set and that gave them the seats for the end carbs complete with indentations.

That would be me with the JB-That however was to get a proper seal on a round log for the o-rings. I don't know if it would work for this app or not , but its certainly worth looking into.
