On the factory carburated manifolds, they are bolted together in the center for heat transfer. I'm wondering why they didn't just cast both manifolds as one piece. You'd have heat transfer through-out the manifold(s). Too much heat transfer?

You must be talking about a 240 or a 300 six.. or an aussie head.. all the american 144 thou 250 have the intake molded as part of the head.

Yes, I was wondering why the intake and exhaust don't get cast as one unit for the 240/300.

Probably would have durability problems with a one piece unit. Lots of things expanding and contracting in different directions on a long unit like that. My 1941 John Deere tractor has both manifolds in one casting but that was to facilitate the use of low-octane fuels such as kerosene. It is also quite compact, being for a two-cylinder engine.

8) weight would be another issue. remember that they were using cast iron then, and the weight of the combined intake and exhaust manifolds would have been around that of a 390 intake(those things weighed in at around 90lbs!!!).
