My carb wont fit like someone told me it would

I've got a 80 head that I bought a remanufactured carb for. Someone told me that I could buy a 1969 Autolite 1101 for a 250 and keep the stock linkage and it would still fit on my 80 head. Either I got the wrong carb, or the wrong advice. Anyone know which carb will fit on my 80 head?

The reason why the carb will not work is that the linkage is wrong on the carb. When the throttle is fully open, the linkage rotates up around the back of the carb by the choke. Here are some pictures.

See how high the little ball that connects to the linkage is? That is when it is closed. Now look at it open.

See how it rotates back behind the choke? I cannot get my linkage to rotate like that, it just won't work.

Is this supposed to be like this, or is the carb messed up?

My autolite 1100 is just a simple up and down movement on the throttle.

Somebody is going to tell you to use a cable throttle instead of the solid bar linkage. Some other body will tell you how to rig up an anchor for the cable at the carb base (I don't).

That is indeed a carb designed for use with an OEM cable linkage, it pulls across the valve cover and that's why you can't duplicate the motion with your current linkage. I've seen two types of 69-70 1101's and it looks like you have the later type, the earlier type uses an upward push just like your old 1100.

Well, should i just take it back and request a newer model? I dont really feel up to converting to cable linkage. Unless it has other advantages.

You are actually looking for the older model- 1969, not late 69/70. If you can take it back and get one with the correct linkage, that's what I'd do. I converted my '68 to use the late 69 and up cable linkage and it is smoother than the older rod linkage (not affected by engine rocking/torqueing, etc.) but I wouldn't say the effort is worth it if you can just get the right carb.

I agree...Cable throttle isn't really worth it IMHO unless you have an odd carb set up (Offy 3x1, Aussie 250/2v, direct mount 2V, etc) that a standard set up will not work with. Otherwise, there are better things to spend money on.

I went by the parts store today, and they didnt know anything about what i was talking about (their computer didnt make a distinction between a cable or a solid linkage carb), so I'm back to looking for a carb. Is there a specific model of car that had an Autolite 1101 in 1969 with a solid linkage, or is there a 1968 Autolite 1101? If so, what model.

HI
I can't look at my right now ... but can't you just eleminate the cam part of your linkage that mounts below the carb on the intake and just run a longer linkage stright off the fire wall where it pull from.... You know what I mean ?? then it would pull it streight back instead of trying to push it up...
