mystery threaded plug in block

fiddling with the new motor, near the welsh plugs on the exhaust side there is a tiny threaded plug in the block, what is it for?? is it blocking off an oil gallery? if so was thinking maybe could run my return line from the turbo into it?

I think it's a coolant drain plug. They used to be on both sides of earlier motors. The main oil gallery in the block is across the other side, near your cam.

May be handy for a water-cooled turbo?

hmm i might be able to use it then if its a water jacket cause when i got the turbo rebuilt i got it changed to a water cooled item aswell so hmmm, thanks addo!

Use a pipe wench or Vise-Grips to pull it out. You'll shortly find the thread and purpose thereafter. You usually only get one crack at these before duffing the head so "grip it good"... (Remember DEVO? )

Whip it, addo, whip it.

They should have done promos for K and N filters.

LOL, think I'll pass on that one. Should have thought more when saying to grip it.

Is that Bono, second right?

Water drain. Vice grips. Pretend its Bonos head and grip it good.

One other option is aftermaket screwd in frost plugs. There is a common mild steel 11 gal drum type which can be tap and died into the block, and then drilled for a BSP or whavever brass union.

You're joking, right?

A block heater in this place would never get used. It barely freezes anywhere. In the grip of winter, some of the tarns on high Tasmanian ranges will freeze but otherwise it's just the odd snowfall and subsequent melt. Even ice on the roads seldom lasts beyond about 1100H.

Well no, it's a legit question, not being familiar with the block design of the aussie 6s' I was just wondering if they might be engineered the same as the North American variety in that regard. Little hole, right hand side behind the alternator.
