This has been going on for some time and it is getting REAL old!

I am running a carter yf off a 170?, it has the 1.5 opening. When I start it cold, I pump it once or twice then hold the pedel down half and it starts on the first or second time......But when it is hot or warm it is much harder to start. Sometimes I give it no gas and it starts up right away, other times when I give it no gas, I get a puff of smoke under the hood and I may need to hold the pedal all the way down to get it to start. Car runs great otherwise.

timing is advanced 5degrees over stock
have played around with the choke, no diff
checked and found no vac leaks
using rubber fuel line to prevent vapor lock

Any suggestions would be great!

Part of the problems of hot starts are just carbureators themselves. My car starts up much better when completely cold compared to Hot, but allowed to cool off for about 30 minutes to an hour.

The puff of smoke makes it sound like your firing order is off, but you say the car is running well once you start it, so that doesn't work.

I would maybe try retarding the timing some. Too much advance can make a car harder to start sometimes.

First thing I notice: advanced timing - especially beyond stock - usually makes for harder starting situations. The engine can vary it's crank-over speed when the timing is too far ahead, which makes an erratic vacuum at the carb. This "flutter" can make the carb run very lean during startup.

The next thing: lots of static advance makes the engine run hotter at low speeds, causing 'hot-carb' syndrome after the engine is stopped. This often makes the carb boil over into the intake manifold, which then makes the next startup difficult. It starts out very rich on the first few revolutions, then goes back to very lean when the fluttering vacuum does it's bit.

First thing I'd try: back off that extra 5 degrees of advance.
Next thing: adjust the air screw on the carb out about 1/2 turn from where it is now.

Hope that helps to get you 'on the track'.

Thanks guys... I will try backing off the timing a bit and see what happens. In a way I hate to do it because I did notice a nice little boost in power when I advanced it.

 The hot carb thing does make some sense to me also. I am using an air cleaner that is sucking all its air from inside the engine compartment rather then cooler outside air..... Sounds like a ram air setup may help with this problem a bit  What do you think?????
