New cam bearings...

Oops!
I just found out the new cam won't fit the old bearings. :?
Didn't exactly "slide in".
Fortunately I have some new bearings that came with the cam from Mike.

Jackfish, when you say old bearings?? How long have they been in the engine?
Look for nicks in the old bearings & mike the new camshaft compared to the old one.
If the present bearings are over 50,000K miles yes new bearings might be in order. How does the old cam fit in the old bearing??
If it fits fine the new camshaft may be bent.
Place the new camshaft in the centers of a lathe & check the runout of the journals using a dial indicator.
A lot of time a new camshaft is not straight. Bill

That picture is the damage I did trying to install the new cam.
Those old bearings are original, and have over 100,000 miles on them.
I think some of the problem may have been that the engine was very cold, sitting outside in temps going down to almost freezing, and the cam was probably warm from being inside.
I'll measure some things later tonight.

I measured the rear cam size and the old one was about 1.811, while the new cam was 1.812, hardly enough be the problem. So I still think I.D. of the bearing shrunk from the cold.

The fubared cam swap turned into a complete rebuild. Oh well! :)
Moly rings & 264/274/112 cam from Mike, bored .030 over, cast pistons, new main and rod bearings @std. with the crank just getting a polish. ARP rod bolts. The double roller chain will stay straight up for break-in.
It was not 0-decked, not trying to build a high-compression motor, want to keep the ratio under 9:1.

What colour should I paint it? :hmmm: Blue? :splat:

Jackfish, fresh short block looks great.
I like the dark ford blue first choice. Dupli-color #1606
Second choice would be black.
You should degree the camshaft in & at least advance the camshaft 2-4 degrees.
Good choice on the camshaft you chose. I am very sure you will be very pleased. Bill

Is it just me or did those cam lobes look awfully dry. Did you put any lube on them before you installed it?

Oh, yeah...I agree with Bill...dark Ford blue. :)
