Thanks to a tip from Explorer I got a rebuilt 1.08 that was original to a 66 Bronco with the 289. I had been looking for this exact carb and was happy to get it. Cost me about $85.00 with shipping. A shop had rebuilt it and it looks great in the picture although have not seen it yet. Next step is direct mount to my recently acquired D8 head and it should be just about right for the mild build planned. Unfortunately passed up a good buy on some used headers because my original plan was not to have headers. With a rv/low range torque type cam, direct mount, 3 angle and backcut with stock exhaust valves, mild port and polish build not intended for high rpm use I felt ok with stock manifold. Has a 2" or slightly larger exhaust pipe from manifold. What do you guys think? Would headers add an appreciable amount of torque? For a little less money I'm thinking high lift rockers would be more return on investment. Looking for that low to mid range torque.

Generally, headers will add up to 18% more power if there is enough carb area and valve lift, with no loss in low end torque.

If you add 1.6:1 lifters, it won't hurt torque but might not help power an appreciable amount. If the carb is not properly insulated from termal soak after the truck has warmed up (via a cool air induction duct to the outer air, which is thermostacialy controlled via a heat stove from the header) , you can loose all the gains in power.

Those headers look exactly like my headers from Clifford. They fit fine on a 63 Falcon, but I can't comment on other cars. Yes, I firmly believe that those headers mated to a thoughtfully designed exhaust would add an appreciable amount of torque. Plus, your engine will run cooler and rev more freely, and hp = torque x RPM (even though I know you're not looking for a high revver). If you hook those B-pipes (which are 2.25) into a nice y-pipe of at least 2.25" outlet (preferably 2.5") and then an equivalently sized exhaust you'll be good to go. Just be sure to use a good metal-composite gasket (From CI) because those pseudo-asbestos ones that Clifford uses are junk and burn up in 6 months.

It's a big investment, headers and exhaust, but I feel like I got more from that mod than I did from my equally pricey 1.65 roller rockers (especially since you are already doing a cam).

IIRC any header will come close to the starter on a 250 (or touch), if you can get a mini starter or there is one starter that fits perfectly but I forget the year (for the 200ci w/ manual tranny, it's the "67 200 mustang"), you might have to test fit some or look at a couple at autozone to make sure they clear it might be a hit and miss.

I'm about to go 1.65 ratio rockers too as I'm curious how it will affect. But I good rule of thumb is that they "add duration to the valve" in a way, the valve opens and close at the same time, they just open faster tricking the engine to flow more air. recently I tried Mikes rockers and it sounded like I had way more lope in the cam than I had before. put my old 1.5 ones back on and the lope went away.

IMO if you went with the rockers and a nice 2.5inch maybe 2.75inch single exhaust you'll be alright for a decent build, the header IMO is more HP high rev range or sound (i'm in for sound), others will disagree, but if your going for torque and MPG then back preasure and velocity of air would be more important at the lower engine speeds (2000-4500rpm).

Good Luck!

Thanks for the info from each of you, all very useful. I think my plan will be the head mods and run for a while with the stock manifold. Now that I have thought about it a nice sounding exhaust would be a plus so I am on the lookout for some used headers. I already have one of those small gear reduction starters that works great so probably no clearance issue there just from the frame most likely.
Was going to bid on the headers Explorer found on ebay but got busy at work and with my attention deficit disorder just plain forgot to bid on them. One thing I have learned is if you think you are going to need a part for a mod start looking way before you will need it.
So if any one knows of some used headers please let me know.
Thanks
