Hey, I just picked up a '54 Ford 2door Sedan with the 223 I-6 and 3 on the column.

I've searched high & low on the internet and have found all the engine specs listed on a website.

I'm trying to find a clutch for this car. I don't know what transmission it has, and I don't know what rear end these cars had.

Eventually I'll swap the 223 for a larger I6 or possibly a Y-Block...but for the next few years I'll just roll with the little 223.

Does anyone know the brand/specs on the 3spd trans, and what rear end & ratio the rear is.

I'm also considering a modern T5 trans or something similar and would like the put lower gears in the rear.

thanks!

Look on the side of the transmission for clues to the make. It might be a Borg-Warner or Warner (not sure when they were emBorged), or a Ford unit. Post any type of tag or casting numbers and we can have a shot at it. Look especially for ones that begin with "B" or "C".

Similarly, there ought to be a tag on the rear end. Part of the tag numbers will look conspicuously like a ratio - because it is.

The easiest way I can think to fit a 5-speed is to get an adapter plate used for the same era V-8 with the same trans. This may turn out to be a Toploader/Tremec adapter. Once we get the trans ID'ed it will be easier.

Regards, Adam.

Your transmission (assuming nothing wierd has been done, and since the shifter is still on the column you are probably safe) is a Ford unit. It will be the same transmission as '52 and '53 cars, and other than the tail shaft and output shaft, the same as '49-'51 cars. Napa or Carquest will be able to get you a clutch. The rear axle, again assuming nothing changed, will be a 3.73, 3.90, or 4.10; most likely 3.90. The best thing you can do for this car is to install a factory overdrive (replaces the tail shaft of the transmission).

You can pick up a 223 to T-5 bellhousing here.

Napa will have a clutch but I went through McLeod. The clutches are larger and use diaphragm action instead of the long throw style. If you're running the borg warner t-85, you have a near indestructible tranny.

Hello people, Can any of you help me I.d. this transmission it is on my 55 ford mainline w/223i6 cast# on the trans is AF-7006-?? ther is also # AB-t222-B on the shifter arm cover.
