oil pump won't pump

Hi, I recently re-built a 200 and put it in my car and I can't get any oil preasure. The pump was brand new and I packed it with petrolium jelly to prime it. I left the car at my dad's house and he has been tring to get it to work, he changed the oil pump, re primed it and still nothing. Is there a trick to doing this or something I'm missing? What are your thoughts?

I had the same problem. I filled the pump up with oil, and put it back on, then filled the car up with oil and removed the distributor. Then I put a CLEAN socket that was the same size as the hex thing inside the distributor hole that turns the oil pump, and used my impact wrench to pump some oil through the motor. When oil comes out of the rockers, you know you are doing something right.

But before you start cranking on it with an impact wrench, make sure it is turning smoothly, you don't want 100 lbs of torque on your engine.

I'm not too sure if this is technically the right way to do it, but it worked for me.

My dad told me that he tried the same thing with an electric drill to turn the oil pump driveshaft and he got nothing. But when he had the pump off the engine and in a bucket filled with oil, it would pump.

Take the oil filter off and try again. Oil should come squirting out the oil filter mount. If not, take a squirt can full of clean oil and empty it into the oil hole in the filter mount. This should prime the oil pump.

Make sure when you spin the pump you're spinning in the right way. I'm not 100% sure on this, but I believe the six spins the other direction the V8 does.

And there is a way to know if you're spinning it the wrong way. If after 2 minutes you're still not getting oil up into the rockers, you're spinning the wrong way. How do I know this? I've done it. As soon as I changed direction, it couldn't have been more than 30 seconds till I had oil in the rockers.

Double check the pickup tube for cracks, sometimes these are only visible when torqued to the pump. If it's sucking air through a bad pickup tube it won't pick up oil.

Well we forgot to put one of those little oil plugs in by the timming chain, and it was loosing all it's preasure there. Thanks for all your thoughts.
