Guys, Im having trouble with cold starts. After I rebuilt the carb the choke doesnt seem to be functioning correctly. This sounds dumb but what I did to temporarly fix this was jam the choke open. In the morning if im lucky.....the car starts with the choke open and idles fine and i let it warm up. but usually it wont start unless I unjam the choke which mens I have to pop the hood every morning start the car...then re-jam he choke. If i let it idle the choke is closed and it idles very rich and very ruff. So obviously my choke is not operating like it should. as you can see this is getting on my nerves and I have not a clue what I could have done wrong? I did remove my emissions control pump. Could this have effected the vacum or something? the linkages seem correct too. Any suggestions would be great. the carb is a single barrel holley #1940 and its on a the car is a 82 granada with a 200 3.3l I6. thanks if you can help

Are you sure that you have a Holley 1940? That carb. has the smaller throttle bore (1.5") and was used in the '60s. You most likely have the Holley 1946, used from 1978-83 (1.75" bore). Big difference between the two. I have the 1946 and didn't think that I would ever get the choke adjusted right. After adjusting it to the specs. in a Chilton's manual, I had to fine tune it a little still to make it work right.

Make sure that your choke pull-off is adjusted properly. (That is the diagram in the front with the linkage that has the half-loop in it.) I also had to turn the choke cap far to the lean side to make the choke turn off. These are very touchy carbs. that take a lot of time and patience to adjust.

Does yours have the full electric choke, or does it have a combination of that and a hot air pipe coming from the exhaust manifold and connecting to the carb?

With this carb, you have to fully depress the accelerator once or twice to engage the choke when the car is cold. That's because of the choke linkage design. When you push the accelerator down, the fast idle screw clears the fast idle cam, then the cam can pop down (from the tension of the choke spring), the choke plate will close, and the fast idle will be working.

I might just get a hand choke. Do I need a specific kit for the specific carb? or are there universal conversion kits.
