Pilot Bearing Problems

I know this is the wrong place I'd imagine, being I'm asking about a Jeep engine but I trust your experience and all. Here's the problem.mom's Cherokee sport has a 4.0L (242 I think) inline 6.Block is cracked.Like in a bad way.Loss of oil into the coolant and coolant into the oil.So we went and got a junkyard engine for it.BUT the junkyard engine is for an automatic and out Jeep is a manual.OK.We got the pilot bearing out of the crank on our engine no problem.NOW the real issue. The enging we pulled from the Jeep has a housing/bearing retainer in the crankshaft that holds the pilot bearing. We have done everything under the sun to try to get that out.Including filling the crank with grease and using a rod the size of the hole to "hydraulicly" push the retainer out.Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

I am a bit confused as to whether you have a needle type bearing or one of the bronze looking bushings. You can use a tap of the right size to cut threads into the bearing and it will bottom out in the crank and push the bearing out. I am not sure if this method will work with the needle bearing type pilot bearings.

see we got the needle bearing out but there is a (steel?) ring in there that the bearing sits in which in turn sits firmly in the crank. The steel ring is the problem.

Are you 100% sure it is not part of the crank? I know of at least one person who worked hard to remove the outer part of the bearing, only to find they had in fact trashed the crank end.

I am 100% absolutly positive. The housing I am trying to remove is a different type of metal than the crank and I have moved it about 1/32 of an inch since I started messing with it.That's about 6 hours of my time to move it 1/32 of an inch and it still needs to go about another half inch to come out.Not working out so well.Thinking of breaking down both engines and getting a rebuild kit and using that crank and getting new bearings and piston rings an gaskets.

I've used Dremel tools to cut the bearing race out of there. I had some clown that Hd peened over the edge of the crank's flange to hold the bearing in place.
I have also had limited success with a pilot bearing remover. A slide hammer type tool that I think I borrowed from Autozone.
