Can anyone tell me what points gap I should set all the books I have are in inches and my feeler gauges are in mm. Does anyone know what the points gap would be in mm. Thanks for any help you can give me. Also for anyone doing these things your self make sure the rotor on the dizzy is correctly fitted before starting her up. The plastic locating slot on my rotor was broken and I didn't think to check it when I put it back on :oops: and thanks to the fact that it wasn't in the right spot I have a rather large whole in my muffler and got the hear probably the loudest bang I have ever heard. :shock: Sounds like a V8 now plus I have an excuse to get a good exhaust for it :wink:

Multiply 25.4 by the points gap to get the mm sizing. Don't forget the decimal point and zero in front of the imperial numbers.

ie; "32 thou" is (0.032×25.4) in mm.

Cheers, Adam.

hi i can't tell you exactly what the gap should be,i have always done it by eye(my first car was a sultan maron xw,221 manual,i wanna punch myself 4 selling it).anyway if you put a good exhaust on it spend another 350 bux and buy a 250 2v head, they bolt straight on and give exelent preformance and good economy.my mate had an xy gs 250 2v toploader 4speed and it went like an 8!it was supprisingly quick and a very sweet combo.if you do this just remember that a 250 2v and a stock 250 have different exhaust manifold gaskets, acl in brisbane have tham in stock and sell them on a regular basis, just order gaskets for a 250 2v.

HSV ETA,
Setting points by feeler gauges is not the best way to do it. But this will suffice if you only have that.
1mm = approx. 4 thou.
Points gap around 16 thou
So by my calculations.
Set the point to around 0.35mm.
Should be near enough.
If you are to continue using a points sytem dissy.
Invest some money in a dwell meter and set them properly.
Usually around 35 degrees dwell angle or 50%.
Noel.

Sorry!
Missed a zero there.
1mm = 40 thou, not 4
Noel.
Why do you only see these as they disappear off the screen

thanks for that info I will check them again on saturday. The are only going to be there until I change over to electronic ignition and the 2V head is at home and should be going on soon. If I get it converted to run on unleaded any rough guesses as to how much it will cost? (The head was fully reconditoned before I bought it and has never been on car since it was done up so only the unleaded conversion is needed.) Can I fit extractors without taking the head off? I think I read somewhere that the head has to be removed and then refitted with the extractors bolted in place, is this true or can I just buy a set and put them on (I already have an exhaust of another XP to suit extractors at home). Which brands are the best and can I run a duel exhaust (i know its not a V8 but i like the look) and if so where is the best place to split it (on an XP)?

X MAN,
Sounds tougher than Xtaxi!
Thanks for those two tips.
I use the "she"l be right system",
Which is usually followed by,
"Oh Bu88ar!"
Note to self,
Must work on that.
HSV ETA,
Do you know Rita?
Or am I showing my age abit?
You extractors can be fitted without cylinder head removal.
It is fiddly, but can be done with some patience.
Should be fairly easy if you are changing the whole system.
The system can be cut and split into two outles anywhere you want it to be.
It could be single down to the diff and split at the tail pipes or a complete dual system from the engine pipes.
Usually cost is the factor in what is done.
Noel.
