ppp

'60 engines used the 1904 carb, '61 engines used the 1908 carb. Both look alike, an exploded view is here: http://www.carburetorfactory.com/expvw11.html

'62 engines used the Holley 1909 carb, it came in two venturi sizes for either the 144 or 170, you can tell which size you have by the little rods supporting the main nozzle in the venturi (I don't remember offhand which is which, but can look tonight if you want). Exploded view here: http://www.carburetorfactory.com/expvw12.html

Anyways, it sounds like your accelerator pump isn't doing its job, which is easy to check, just look down the carb bore while opening the throttle, you should see a stream of gas shooting from a nozzle...if you don't see gas, check:
* On the bottom of the carb, is the link between the throttle and pump rod (#18) in place? (parts #6 and 7)
* Checkball (#24) and pump inlet valve (#22) inplace and freely moving?
* Pump passages clear and not clogged?
* Accelerator pump rubber flexible and sealing against the sides of its hole?

Hmm...have you double-checked the off-idle transition slot just above the throttle plate at idle? Might be some trash blocking that somewhere.

Is it otherwise working fine at idle and above 1000rpm?

Hmm...I'm out of ideas, except to do like you're thinking and swap another carb on and see how it runs.

Could well be ignition-related - I had a Mustang years ago that would cut out at random while accelerating - turned out a previous owner added a wire to the ignition circuit for some unknown reason, and it was hanging down and shorting out every so often...

Anybody else have any thoughts?
