Progress report-Offy 3 X 1 Conversion.

There have been many times over the past several weeks that I wish I could have bought an off the shelf Offy 3x1. There have been numerous occasions when I was so frustrated with my limited mechanical skills that I was tempted to pull the whole thing, trash it and and just get a two bbl adapter and a carb and end the problems. Despit the problems, about four hours ago, I finally met with some sucess. I ended up installing the head with the headers and the Offy 3 X 1 adapter as a single, preassembled unit to the block. After a last minute run to a local parts store for a new fuel pump, I hit the button on the remote starter and the beast came to life. I can't describe the feeling I got this afternoon when It fired kup and ran.

Still got a lot of work to do to adjust out the system and make it road worthy, but I would like to to take this time to thank every one who has responded to my request for help.

Oh yeah I hear ya. How much better does it feel having worked it out yourself. The first time you get it on the highway and open it up - watch out for lack of bloodflow to your brain.

There's a set of pictures of me that my grandma took when I fired up the engine in my grandparent's driveway for the first time, and I am seriously jumping like 10 feet off the ground, and my arm's in the air and I'm smiling and it's the greatest picture ever! I'll see if I can find it and post it up here. It's the best feeling in the world. Congratulations.

Grats.

I still remember firing up my Offy 3x1 and driving it down the road. I still grin ear to ear from the thought. I also still get giddy when I go WOT with the Aussie.

I also still remember firing up my Offy 3x1 and driving it down the road for the first time. The first time I stabbed the throttle to wide open, the throttle return spring popped off and the engine went into wide open runaway mode. Fortunately I didn't panic too much and was able to remember I could just shut off the key, but it was a scary moment as that engine revved up past 5500 rpm in an instant!

Once I fixed that spring (and ran a second one for insurance) it was fun, fun, fun!

I remember just that feeling when I finally got the turbo running and took it for a drive. the first time it was leanign out sooo bad and we got it better and better and I took it down the road and my heart was racing. congratz and glad your hard work finally is paying off!

Yesterday before I got it running, it tried to defeat me at least one more time. After a half hour of trying to get fuel to the carbs, I gave up on it and had to run to the parts store for a new fuel pump. apparently after two months of sitting dry, the fuel pump just gave up the ghost. Less than two minutes after bolt up and lines attached, it fired up with a roar that near scared the crap out of me. I had forgot how loud she can be running straight off the headers and I was standing right over them. Any way, ran it again today for a short while to do some minor center carb adjustments and other button updetails. More than likely it will be after the weekend before I get it out on the street. Without the Monte Carlo bar, the picture is more or less the final set up. Still got a lot of fine tuning to do, but at least she started.

I'd like to say thanks again to all of you who have have help with your advice, but just as important, your support and encouragement.

Stan

In response to the above quesion, I'm using Autolite 1100 from 1963 170 CID engines, some guys are using the early Holleys, or you can go with new Webers

Is there any difference among the 1100s? Are they the load-a-matic type? And what is your dizzy setup?

Yes, there are some differances in the 1100, but I got to admit that I am not really the person to answer that question. So I am hoping that David, who co-wrote the handbook on Falcon Performance, or someone far better at carbs than I am will pipe in to answer that part. Right now I am using a stock Dizzy II from a 1981 Zepher. As soon as the budget allows I will replace it with a recurved one from the guy on the sticky on this suject, to fit the changes I have made for performance. The retired mechanic who has been my local advisor has been trying to talk me into an Mallory with an MSD control box if I rember his suggestion correctly, abut I want to stay with the Ford products for the nostalgia effect and my budget..

Haa haaaa, feels great... don't it !?! I just fired mine up yesterday. Despite the carb floodin', fuel leakin' and what I think is a stuck thermostat causin' radiator fluid spewin' everywhere, it was a wonderful roar and flames out the header!!! Can't wait til next weekend.

Sounds like we are reading from the same book. Two flooding carbs taken apart and cleaned, Turned out one wasn't flooding, it was a leaking accelerator pump, two leaking fuel lines, one at carb, and one at fuel distribution block and this morning had to remove the new thermastat as it was stuck. Spent most of today trying to adjust linkage using the rods that Offy furnished with the kit on the outboards and the original from Ford on the center. I wish I had two more of the originals. They are adjustable, but once adjusted there is no flex like there is in the ones that came with the kit. Well at least it's running a lot smoother than it was yeaterday, but still not enough to trust beyond the driveway.

And i haven't even hooked up the fuel lines to the outboards yet! Have a waterneck gasket in my pocket at the moment waiting for me to get off work. 195 degree thermostat wouldn't open til well after the pot of water started boiling. Unfortunately, I have tons of homework to do. Little steps at a time.

Best of luck,

And in return, I wish you the best of luck. Have had nothing but problems with mine over the past two days. Can't get to run under load. Posted questions on the problems as a new item .

I wish I had the guts to ruun a triple set-up. That is so beautiful. It really is teh ideal when opening the hood of a six banger. Mine is a daily driver and it just runs too damn goog right now as is.
Very nice job.

mustang652, I love your signature. I was in the USAF in the late 80s. God bless.

Thanks, and I have to laugh at myself on the runs too darn good comment as I proceeded to try to fix something that wasn't broke. The car ran just fine and I already had a reasonably nice engine bay before I started this project. Fits under the category of "the harder I work, the behinder I get" at this point. Hind site being 20/20 if I had to do it again, I would go with the direct mon modification of the carb plate directly to the intake or the Aulstrailian head. Going the the tool store shortly to see if I can get a vac guage. Sounds like something I am going to need quite a bit in the near future.
