My mechanic is too busy this week to help pull my head for me so Im doin it myself. I need to know what I need to do. Should I drain the oil, etc? What all goes into doin this. I know it isnt that hard, but I would like to know from someone who might have done it what prededures to follow. Thanx
Matt

You don't need to drain the oil, but drain the coolant first. Disconnect the top hose from the gooseneck, disconnect the exhaust pipe from the manifold, disconnect fuel line & linkage from the carb, remove the carb, disconnect the wire from the sensor near the driver side rear, remove the valve cover, remove the head bolts, and unplug the spark plugs and pull. It's heavy and probably stuck a little so be careful. If you slide it onto a piece of plywood it makes it easier to handle. Good luck!

Man,
You are all over my posts today, I really appreciate it. I finally got tired of waiting to get things done this summer (being that Ive waited the entire summer!!!!!!!!!!) and decided to do it myself. If it wasnt for this site and people like you I wouldnt know what the heck I was doing. I really appreciate it!!!!!!!!

Loosen the head bolts in the opposite order of tightening. Take it slowly. Take pictures for later reference. Label everything. Keep pushrods in proper order by placing them into holes in cardboard, and label everything. Did I mention labeling? Label every nut and bolt, placing grouped items in ziplock bags. Don't forget to label.

I have already replaced my head and i was just wondering y take the headbolts off in reverse order of putting them on. I didnt do that althouhg i think i should have and will next time. HINTAlso if you have a digital camera clear the memory card and take lots and lots of pictures that u can use later as a referance. I also took a pice of cardboard and drew the head and poked holes where the head bolts go so they would go back in the same whole.

You really need to get a book, or at least copy the diagram. It is important to follow the sequence. Generally, you tighten from the inside out, evenly. You loosen from the outside in. It is best to do it slowly, and deliberately, while looking at the diagram.

well, Im doin it tomorrow so unless I can find a good book somewhere like autozone or somethin, Im just gonna have to wing it, carefully, lol. Does anyone on here have a diagram to follow that they can post?? If not, thats kool too. You guys have helped me out alot so far, I really appreciate the quick responses, bein my first time I really needed this!

Here's the sequence for loosening:

2 7 11 14 10 6 3
Front <--
1 8 12 13 9 5 4

And for tightening:

13 8 4 1 5 9 12
Front <--
14 7 3 2 6 10 11

Still, it's best to get a book, like bigred says.

Check Ebay. I got a CD manual for my '64 Comet 200 cid. When you're working on a particuliar part of your car, all you need to do is burn off some pages from your CD manual and take it out to the car. You don't have to worry about a big bulky book or getting grease on it..ZZ

Got it off, no prob, now waitin for the machinist. He said it would be too expensive to port and polish I think, couldnt quite understand, but I will talk to him in person and figure what his deal is in my case.

This is a great thread. It will be very helpful if I snap a bolt while trying to remove the exhaust manifold on my 200ci. The bolts have been very hard to remove but I have been taking my time and not forcing the bolts out. Only 3 to go and I can install the port divider...then the headers from Mike (I cant wait to get that installed :D ).

Label label label...LABEL! Take pictures, many pictures and label everything...take more pictures, label everything, and then take some more pictures and label some more things, then take pic....I'll shut up now. :?

Yeah, I purposefully broke one bolt that I took in to have fixed even, but nooooo. My original manifold somehow cracked in half, lol, so I bought one off a 68 or so. It was a little bigger so I had to get a custom downpipe etc. Well, one of the bolts to hold the exhaust downpipe on got froze up after coming loose so I couldnt fix it and make the exhaust quieter again (it came apart monthly, lol). Well, my mechanic fixed it supposivly but when I went to take the head off and the exhaust off, I couldnt cause of that one bolt. So I gave it He!! and it broke off. No biggie, but it was a pain. I usually fixed it myself when it came off, but this time I paid thinkin it would be a permanent fix, it was about to come off when I took it apart. Oh well, yalls answers to my questions are unbelievable in how they not only help me on my projects, but also keep me entertained
