Question about my car

I have a 69 Fairlane 2 dr fastback that originally had a 351W in it.

The 351 is now gone and I was thinking of a new motor.

I know the fairlanes came with a 250 6 banger as an option.

How hard would it be to put a souped up 250 into the car?

Also would a souped up 250 N/A engine be enough for the car or should I just put another 351W back in?

I would love to have the honor of surprising people with that engine in the car but I am also wanting some practicality in it.

If going six means it will be doggy and suck just as much gas then I will go with the 351.

I hope I have asked my question clearly enough for you folks.

Some days I have a hard time explaining myself.

Thanks

8) a turbo 250 would be an interesting motor, but realize that for what you seem to want a 351 would be a better choice. the fairlane is a heavy car, and while you can get decent performance from a hopped up six, i dont think you would get what you are looking for.

I guess I should also include in my requirements that I am not looking at roasting the tires. At least not all the time. 8)

Just looking to get the old girl to scoot and keep up with traffic and pass the slowpokes on the way to work would be more than enough.

Right now I drive an 80 Chev full size pickup with a 350 and that thing is a gas guzzling dog.

So any improvement would be greatly welcomed.

going to tyhe 250 I6 you might have to change the rear gears as they well be higher geared then it would have been if it came with a 250 in it...
Just a thought.

cool.

Now another question.

Would a 240/300 six fit in the engine bay or not?

Should I use the regular head or should I wait for the aluminum head?

That should work the 3.50's are a good compromise and in the ballpark for good street performance gears.Build the motor for torque and keep your gear ratio in mind aswell as what rpm's you are driving in most of the time when choosing a cam.

8) not only will the 300 fit, it would be a better choice than the 250 would be.

I would have to agree with rbohm on the 300 a much better choice with a lot more potencial for easy power.
I'm thinking I want to build a roadster or Rat Rod with a 300 built for power myself.. :D

Another bonus if a 300 will work is they made those till 96 so they are much easier and cheaper to find than the 'small blocks' that ended around 80. You could grab one from a truck complete with EFI computer and all to get going cheap and get the car on the road while you read up and dream about what you really want to do with the 2nd junkyrd motor sitting in the shed that will now just 'bolt in' once you build it up.
