Ram Air

i read the thread about ram air and one guy sudjested puting an electric fan inside the hose to suck more air into it. has anyone tried this?

An electric fan will never move enough air to make any power, plus the power it pulls to make it run will drag on the motor. Ram air alone will work just fine.

This idea has been beaten to death on car forums all over the internet. You would have trouble finding an electric motor that spins hard enough to pump enough air to give you enough of a boost for you to see an increase.

Such an electric motor would probably have to run on way more than 12 volts, and the modifications required to the electrical system, and the weight of such a motor itself would probably cancel out any performance you would gain.

In other words it'd be cheaper and easier to bolt on a conventional turbo or supercharger.

well i plan on buying a bolt on 2bbl weber/holley from that stovebolt website. i'll have plenty of ramm air on it then because i'll have to cut a hole in my hood and put on a scoop. i fabricated a ram air sytem for the 1bbl i have on my engine now but i took it off, i dont think it was working too well because of the way i had it set up :?

Sounds like the old Electric Supercharger idea.

The advantage of RAM air is getting cooler air into the engine vice sucking warmer engine back air.

Pushing the air makes it like a turbo/super charger and the HP/PSI ratio would always leave you shorter on power then gains unless you went with a battery based system, which then is only temporary.

I still maintain that cowl induction is the best. It's the highest pressure place on the car, plus it just looks cool. If you wanted to be stealthy just duct from the cowl panel like the original Z-28s did.

from what ive heard, and read in a couple articles, that hood scoops dont work very well. i actually read an article where the 'ram air' (hood scoop) they installed on a stock 5.0 actually hurt performance. air would 'glide' over the hood, i would think, whereas it hits the flat radiator support and creats pressure. theres also a high pressure area, like wallaka said, at the cowl when the air hits the windshield before you cut holes in your hood, thoroughly research theory and actual results.

how are you going to make sure the hood scoop is centered, its already there on a v8, but our carbs are offset to the passengers side. you would most likely have to modify the hood scoop you get, or make your own anyways.

well once i put the 2bbl weber/holley up there i'll have no onther choice than a scoop, a cowl would make it look like like more than it realy is. and sice ram-air is a myth thats out of the question. :?

Why? I haven't heard of a burning need for THAT much clearance from anybody but Powerband...

Oh, and you can do the Ram Air thing...just don't expect much power gain from it. It might gain a little, but only because the air will be cooler than before.

i dont know if the 429 scoop would realy help as far as ram-air goes. the real reason for the 429 is that once the hole is cut in tha hood of my maverick i'll need somthing to cover up the air filter. i dont want to be riding around with an offcenter air filter sticking out of my hood in plian sight. i know that a cowl would be better but the 429 looks better from a cosmetic standpoint.

the sccop i plan on getteing is only 3in tall

Why not just a drop base air cleaner? I seriously doubt that it is that much of an issue, but I guess you'll be able to mock it up when the parts come in.

wallaka, doesn't nascar pull air though the cowl? In front of the windshield?
Ken
