Good day

I am just collecting all my parts for my rebuild and this is what I have:

Rebuilt head(early 80's)with port divider,3 angle valve job
Rebuilt block(68 ish)
Stock cam
2 barrel Holley
K&N Air Filter
Duraspark
Header
Rebuilt C4

I am not looking for a race engine but do i need to update the cam to get any noticeable gains?

Thanks

Absolutely (sort of).

I would suggest a reground cam. After seeing distributor gear wear problems with new camshafts I personally believe that having your own one reground, may be a safer option.

In tandem with the regrind (or new cam, should you choose) an adjustable timing set is paramount.

If the block has been rebuilt to more or less stock specs, then you can't really go with a high performance cam - it will bleed off excessive compression. Just something with a hair more performance than theoretical stock.

8) check out the cam selection at www.classicinlines.com they are quality grinds from clay smith, one of the top cam grinders in the world. pick one that works in the 1000-5000 rpm range. and pick up a roller timing chain set while you are there.

Howdy Steve:

What is your planned compression Ratio?

Did you deck the block?

What trans and rear gear will you be using?

The answers to the above questions will help to narrow the answer to your next question, which is- "What cam should I use then?"

IF your going this far, you should absolutely use a new aftermarket performance cam and timing gear.

That's my 2 cents, for what it's worth!

Thanks for your input everyone.
David,in response to your questions:
The block is not decked,I do not know what my compression ratio is going to be,I have not really got that far and really do not know what that entails yet.
I am rebuilding a stock C4 and so far leaving the stock rear alone.
My goal was to get a little more hp to be able to be a little more quick off the line and be able to at least pass something on the highway if needed.
