..... main design concern was gas mileage. The engineers were told to do everything to increase the miles per gallon rating......
Yup. Keeping the intake warm and stable is a significant advantage when pursuing economy. Not a new concept, Willys did the same thing on their F-Head. Doesn't help high-speed performance a bit.
Joe

high speed?!?! I believe I spun dad's CJ2A up to about 30mph and got scared, ONCE. We were sportin' a L-head in it, one ride I really miss.

Startin' to sound like a SOB  ...Southern Ohio Boy.

Never had the "too cold winter" problem in SC. The summers on the other hand, 100+ degrees and 100+ humidity... I remember some days parked in the sun the car when "cold" registered on the low end of the operating temp before I cranked it up.

I used the cardboard trick a few years ago with my '79 F250 when the carb kept freezing up when running hwy speeds. Of course that was a cold snap of -7. I really don't understand how you tundra-mongers can deal with those winters. This Southern boy has to draw the line at the teens. NJ is cold enough... :bang:

The Aluminum radiator came in today. I'll install it Saturday and post pix.

I grew up in NC. 18 years there.

I went to school in CT, got used to the cold. However, the first time I saw that much snow and someone handed me a snow shovel (when to a military academy) I said "What's this for?, you mean you don't just let it melt?"

Then I got stationed in Southern California. Talk about getting soft. Winters were rough there...I mean, lows in the mid 40s...rough. Summers were worse...highs were 90* with no humidity and a sea breeze. I loved San Diego.

Now I'm back in new england wishing I had never left. Then again, everytime I go back to the south in the summer...I can't take it anymore.
