Here's how it works:

1.) Module-for-module, you can plug the Yellow Grommet Duraspark into the harness where your blue or black grommet module is now. The only thing that will change is the dwell: it goes from 42 degrees (blue module) to 45 degrees (yellow), which makes the spark a little hotter. Static timing settings do not change.
2.) Add the vacuum sensor to the Yellow grommet module by just plugging it in (do this ONLY when the ignition is OFF). Don't hook the vacuum line to it yet: start the engine and you will see the timing is retarded about 4 degrees from your "normal" setting. Now, adjust the distributor until your original timing is restored (in other words, you're adding 4 degrees advance to this setting).
3.) Kill the engine again. Connect a vacuum line from the vacuum sensor to MANIFOLD vacuum. Start the engine and you will see your original advance +4 extra degrees. This will make your idle faster, so slow it down at the idle adjust screw.

For example, my Fairmont uses 10 degrees BTDC static advance. Plugging in the Yellow Grommet module changes this to 6 degrees BTDC. Now, I adjust the dizzy to 10 degrees BTDC with no vacuum on the sensor. Next, I plug in the vacuum line and get 14 degrees advance at idle. When it starts, it starts at 10 degrees. If I stomp the throttle from idle, it drops to 10 degrees until the dizzy starts adding it's advance. All of this is IN ADDITION to the vacuum advance in use on the distributor: altogether it still does not generate any ping.

Here's what happens: whenever you are driving under LIGHT LOAD, like 30-40MPH city traffic or idling, the Yellow grommet adds 4 degrees of advance to improve efficiency. This saves gas by adding engine RPM to the throttle setting you are using. When you accelerate enough to drop the vacuum to about 8"-10" Hg, the extra advance drops out so that you don't get ping. As soon as you let up on the throttle, the advance returns for better MPG.

When starting, the Yellow Grommet module backs off to the "no vacuum" setting, which is your normal static timing.

My Fairmont gains 1-2.5 MPG with this setup, depending on how aggressively I'm driving....

what cars came with it and where can I get the vac. sensor thanks what a cool find

The Yellow Grommet module came on T-Birds (1977-79), LTD (same era), Cougar (same era) and slightly earlier Mercury products. It is most commonly found on 351W or 351M engines, sometimes also on the 400M. Junkyards typically sell the module and sensor together for about $10. These units are also available new, but the price can be several times more.

Just remember one thing: ground the module to the fender before trying it, or it may not work at all. The case is the anti-EMI ground for the whole thing. It's not hard to just unbolt the old and bolt in the new - they are a direct replacement.

Yea I know I`ve had to replace the module more than once   thanks for all the info I`ll need to try this once I get some more of that green stuff :D
