how hard is it to supercharge or turbo a carby 250 xflow and how would one go about it ?

It's not easy or cheap, but its do-able. Becasue the scope of turbos and blowers is so large, you cannot get a precise answer on this one!

dukeowindsor, in a post back in the early pages of the Aussie forum about 2003 disclosed his red XF ute with LPG and autorotor supercharger. It was a very clean swap without power steering. Very well organised. He used to be the owner of Cohee Service station. Check that post first.

Second, look in the Aussie forum posts on turbo X-flows and then look at the early stuff in the Hardcore section. The site has been reorganised for easy referecne, but a good deal of discussion happened a while ago which is best done by searching. The early search parameters only go to October 2003. After that, a search of auther and subject works well, before then, it yields no results.

A few points.

Its very dificult to generalise. The cheapest turbo conversion is undoubtably the early log head engines, such as Importkiller's Mustang with a four bearing 170 engine. It has a simple J-tube, Buick turbo, and a very easy to fit CFI Jeep air cleaner bonnet on an after market Holley 2-bbl. If you want to price this, it is the cheapest.

The second option is the factory Mike Vine, AIT, or Benson and Normalair Grarret set ups. Ray Hall turbo charging did some too. these fir X-flows ahd were very good street turbos.

Third is the custom made ones which don't use the cast iron exhasts made by AIT, Mike Vine or Normalair Garret. These are Metal Works or custom argon back purged steel tubers. George is doing one on his Cortina 250. His website is a lot of fun. The amount of time spent doing this can be huge. The off the shelf cost of a prefabricated steel header to fit a T72 or TO4 turbo is massive.

Forth, the Americans have an off the shelf item for 250 US blocks at a price.

Fifth, a custom supercharged item, such as dukeowindsor's is very difficult to make so that its relaible. There are pictures of a blue TD LPG Cortina with a one off a cobbled together Toyota SC14 supercharger. There is an Eaton M90 off a Commodore/Buick L48 v-6 on a 200 Mustang with a totally rework IFS system. I was planning a Wade R034 or a 4/71 on a 4-bbl intake manifold on my old Falcon.

If you don't mind it sticking out of the bonnet, and don't want A/C, power steering or a bashing 3 inches out of the crossmember/subframe on all post XD-XG Fords, you can do anything.
