Hi
Quick question. I have a stock 200 I6 with Autolite 1100 carb, C4 auto box, standard dizzy with points and SCV. I have an MSD 6AL fitted and an MSD Blaster coil. What sort of gap should i set the spark plugs at...?
Regards
Sy

Howdy Sy:

A good generality is to gap at .045" and analyse from there. Details like engine condition, type of trans, type of driving, ambient temperature and engine temp, heat range and age of the plugs you are using and initial advance are just a few of the variables that enter into finding the ideal gap for an engine. Try this- assuming that the plugs are in good shape, set the gap at .045" and drive it. IF you don't get any miss at either end of the rpm range in which you drive, increase the gap to .050" and assess again. There is not much point in going beyond .050" with a stock type plug. IF the engine misses, either at a loaded idle or at higher rpms reduce the gap by .002" at a time and reassess.

Please report your progress.

8) i prefer setting my plug gaps between .040 and .045" regardless of what electronic ignition system i am using as i have found that to work best for me. for points operated systems, i prefer .035 to .040", though i will go wider if i am using a point controlled CD ignition. what i suggest is that you experiment with point gaps. start at .035" and go up .005" at a time. each step you want to do a fuel economy run of at least three tanks of fuel for a good average. you also want to run the gap as wide as possible without missfire at any rpm range.
