spigot bearing woes

g'day

Just put a new clutch in this week, was a conversion from auto to 4 speed manual for an xflow 250 and so i bought a new spigot bearing, the type with the rollers exposed on the inside of the bearing so they roll between the bearing housing and the input shaft.
Anyway i put it all together right, it all lines up and bolts together nicely, when i go to drive the thing its really difficult to change gears, though the clutch is working properly. the only thing i can put it down to is the spigot bearing binding up. The gearbox worked fine with the previous engine so its not that.
The gearbox is leaking from the input shaft onto my new clutch i'm not sure if that contributed to the problem but now i'm faced with the question of what to do about it?
i'm going to pull the gearbox off to put new seals in, and while i'm at it i'm going to need to replace the spigot bearing apparently. I don't want to pull the box off again anytime soon as this will be the third time already in the last few weeks, so what can i do to stop this happening again? i want to get the type of bearing it had previously; the enclosed ball bearing type as i had no problems with that one, but the roller one seems to be the only one anyone carries, should i give it another try? do these bearings need time to bed in? can anyone offer some sort of insight or advice in this matter?

That type of spigot bearing should be OK, but have you got the correct bellhousing for your length of input shaft, a little measuring should verify if alls well. The difficult shiftings is unlikely to be the spigot brg, but your clutch could be dragging, your hydraulic in the XY? Check its bled and working properly. theres no adjustment on the bellhousing.
The brgs should last forever, there was a sintered bronze busg at one stage, but ive got seen one for a while, although you could turn one up if you really wanted to.

the bellhousing is the same used previously and it all worked fine, i only changed in a xflow (from a previously pre xflow) engine which i had to convert from auto to manual, all the clearances should be the same and i checked the spigot bearing before i fitted it, and it was a good fit for the input shaft
 
i pulled her all apart, and input shaft to crank clearance is good, at least 5mm. there is a slight wear on the input shaft from the previous bearing but its barely noticeable, i think (hope) it is an alignment issue...
