When letting the car idle for any length of time or after prolonged city street driving the starter doesn't want to spin the engine past each compression stroke. It has nothing to do with the timing as i have the ignition and fuel pump on a separte switched circuit. Turning the key activates the starter but the ignition has to have a separate switch flipped for fire and fuel. If driven at any speed at all the starter works fine for restart immediately but if idled for any length of time it has to cool off for 10 min before it will crank again. Reckon this is from the excessive heat from the headers building up in that area.
My question- is this typical with headers in these older 6's or is maybe my starter just getting too old. Don't want to just blow money on a new starter and have the same problem or should i just install a heat shield -but don't want to waste time on a heat shield if it is a starter issue.
Anybody else been here?
