First thing is i would like to say that the new site is really different. I havent been here in a few months because my computer was down and i finally got a new one(YAY) I think that it looks really good and i was quite surprised when i saw it. Now down to business. For those of you who remember problem from before, i did the T-5 swap last year after my third 2.77 3 spd. After i got the T-5 in and was able to drive the car again i noticed a vibration that comes in at high RPMs and drones in and out and shakes the car, and it happens whether im driving or idling. Any ideas??

i think i remember it... don't know if it was you or someone similar...
is it only at high RPM's, or is it at low RPM's, just barely noticeable?
could be anything along the drivetrain...
idling, should be in neutral... that would isolate it to the tranny at the very least.....

if i remember correctly, there are dampers that can be attatched to the t5 to eliminate these vibrations, there is another post on this somewhere, ill try and look for it

When's the last time you driveshaft was balanced.

We just helped someone with a similar problem earlier.

Check the play in your slip yoke and transmission tail shaft. There is a bearing there that may be worn out. If you have any up and down play in the slip yoke while attached to the tranny, then that may be your problem.

Also check your slip yoke. Was it new? I had a used one that was seriously gouged from wear (on 40k miles) and may have caused a problem like that had I not replaced it with a new slip yoke.

If you go to the Driveline forum and scroll down till you see 'shaky trans',
I think it was posted in the first of June, this should help....Paul

asa: it only comes in at high RPMs and it is noticable enough to know that it is there and i know that it shouldnt be. And i dont think it is the drivetrain because it happens when im in neutral too, sorry that wasnt clear.

rogue: thanks

cobra: the driveshaft was balanced on the second of january this year; the day before i put it in. All the bearings are new and the slip yoke was also brand new.

Thanks rancheroman

This has come up before some time ago. I will repeat something that has not yet been mentioned in this string.

With the car sitting normal (not jacked up) take a look at the dimension from the end of the tail cone to where the yoke changes from the slip shaft to the fork area. There should only be about 1/2 inch, 3/4 max. To give you an idea, after taking your measurement, jack up the car and measure again. This will give you an idea of how far the yoke moves in and out of the tail cone. You want the yoke as far inside the tail cone sleeve as possible. On some of these trani’s I’ve seen different types of tail cone boots. Some are up to an inch away from the end of the tail cone, like the one I have. I hade the driveline built so the transition to the fork is right up to the boot. It made quite a difference to the vibration.

Good luck, Ric.

I dont have much play either Ric, i dont remember how much, but it is pretty little. And this vibration also comes in when the tranny is in neutral, so i think its coming from the engine because it happens when there is nothing going to the transmission. thanks.

If the vibration is occuring with the trans in neutral and the car is at rest, then it has to be in the engine or something bolted to it.

First (as always) rule out ignition problems. A high speed miss is a possibility. Commonly caused by a bad wire.

Then look carefully at the clutch/flywheel assembly. Are all the bolts present? Even one left out can cause a vibration at high rpm.

Was the flywheel resurfaced? Done incorrectly, that can cause vibration.

Does the flywheel wobble? How about the harmonic balancer? Are they both running straight and true?

Did the ring gear shed any teeth?

Did the clutch disc loose a spring or some friction material?

Unfortunately, some of this may require some disassembly to inspect, but vibration can be very bad for the engine.
