strange noise

Went out today to start the car, when it finally got started, it started making this wierd clicking noise. It gets louder when the rpms get higher etc. Does NOT effect performance, the car feels fine, it just has this loud obnoxious noise that sounds like your tapping your foot to the rpm's on a plastic shopping bag. Anyone know if this is an exhaust leak, a blown head gasket, what??? Im in Nashville and dont know any mechanics here, I know a bunch back home (bout 40 minute drive) and am wondering if it would hurt it to drive that far? Lemme know guys, Im gonna try and hunt down some sockets and torque down the header and exhaust bolts and see if that helps. Oh, if it helps any, the sound seems like its coming from the back of the motor. PLease help guys, this just started today and its annoying the crap outta me

My first guess would be an exhaust leak. I have one right now on my stock manifold. Very loud and annoying. It's actually almost un noticable while driving the car until you step on the gas. then you can hear it. I've been too lazy to fix it since in a few weeks I'll be putting my new aussie head, headers, and other stuff.

I tightened the header bolts to the head, nothin. Cobra, your describing exactly how mine is, barely noticeable until you get on it, then it gets louder. Funny thing is, I noticed it more when I was lookin for where it was when I neeled to look under it. Hmm..... Now I need to go out and tighten the header flange bolts. Hopefully that will work, keep me from runnin it over to the mechanic  I dont have time to mess with a blown head gasket dangit!!! Oh well, we shall see tomorrow, I would run do it now but I am going to be in the studio till 1am tonight. Should be kickin!

what do you do in the studio? music? I'd love to hear some

the tapping sound COULD be bad lifter, as it was fo rme...or maybe only of your valves needs adjusting...if you remove the valve cover (after trying the exhaust leak) you can find out..

Hey, how about when the engines running, have somebody behind the wheel and You over the engine. Have them rev up the engine and with your hand or a piece of paper. Go all around your head, exhaust and the exhaust donut gasket flange. I got a feeling it's down at that flange. You'll feel a leak. Remember safety first..ZZ

can the flange go bad? or is it like a wedge and just would need tightening? just curious....

It would have to be the bolts at the flange. Im fixin to head out there right now and see, stupid cold weather tho, I hate it. Yeah, I am in a recording class and I had to work on a project. We were recording in RCA studio B made famous by Elvis and a few other big names. My Suite mates got together and did the song, it sounded awesome. Since I didnt know what I was doing (first time in studio actually making things work) it REALLY helped to have experienced musicians behind me. Well, Im gonna go check it out, Ill post what happens guys.
