strange stall

Well my falcon is up and running, idles great and drives very smooth, shifts and all. Recently though i've noticed that it will stall when i put it in nuetral, not like a sputter, just like it dies. At first i assumed it was running out of gas, but it will drive fine, then just flat die, then it wont fire up again for a little. So i'm starting to think its the wiring in it right now, or could it be the coil (i am using the one that was in it originally?) Other then that once you wait a while, and start it, it fires back up and revs just fine, so its not low gas. What do you guys think it is?

Auto or manual transmission?
I assume if you have orignal coil that you still have a points dizzy?

When it stalls does it sometimes restart fine or does it always have the delay?

Are you in a warm or hot part of the world? Maybe its some sort of vapor lock or like you suspect the coil overheating. If it was the coil it would seem strange that putting it in neutral would kill it, you would think it would be worse with a light load on it.

If this happens like when doing something like parallel parking when you are lightly on and off the gas several times it could be a need for some adjustments and checking for wear and tear on the carb. Going to idle and coming off idle are difficult for carbs, if things are not just right they can stall easily. Maybe your throttle shaft is wearing thus closing the throttle blades to far causing it to be prone to stalling?

Dont overlook a choke issue, thats one of those things that could easily drift. Manual choke the cable could have come loose and even with the knob pushed in it could still be on a bit. Automatic choke could have many issues but both are easy to check. Engine warmed up the choke blade should be vertical. If you think you have a automatic choke issue report back and I or someone else will give you the rundown on what to check, repair, or adjust.

well its a manual, and it doesnt just do it at low idle type stuff, it mostly does it when just driving regularly and go to shift. I'm using a pertronix ignitor, and the carb is a brand new pony carberator so it better not be the carb :P. Oh and when it stalls there is always a delay of at least 20 seconds before it will fire again, the starter will spin, but the engine will not fire. Thats why i think its electrical because that engine always fires right up, even before i rebuilt it and everything it would always fire right up.

I'm using a pertronix ignitor,

Can you swap it out with something else to see if that's your problem?

Try running a separate ground strap from the distributor body to the block to see if that helps. A poorly grounded distributor will cause all kinds of weird things.

so why do you use the starter instead of compression starting (pulling teh clutch out in gear)? thats what i always do when it stalls (which is frequently, as i need to adjust the carb)

I'll be honest its my first manual, and i've just figured out how to drive it. What is this method your talking about?

Well.....unless you are on a hilltop or are being pulled by someone, what he is talking about is if the car is still rolling when it stalls on you, Quickly put it in 2nd and let the clutch out quickly and it will start up again

hmmmm, i'll give that a try, maybe i'll drive it around tommorrow. Right now the driving is just in the neighborhood, i gotta get a vin check to register it properly. Either way, i can test it out *shrug*.

Learning to drive a specific manual, especially one with a clutch fork instead of a hydraulic clutch or something, it's a loooot different. On the truck, I don't even give it gas from first, it just rolls if I let up the clutch slowly. =) On my mom's kia, I give it a lot of gas, spin the tires, and then without clutching I take it to second with no grind. 8)

oh i have no problem working the clutch, took me about an hour to get used to it now i can go no problem. I just dont know all the old tricks with a clutch :). It does feel different then my buddys jeep though, i learned to drive stick on that, and with the jeep i feel the clutch with my foot, in my falcon the car starts to roll and tahts how i know.

My 1997 Mustang GT (sohc) and my 1997 Cobra (dohc) have COMPLETELY different clutches. Not sure why...I know the Cobra is supposed to be heavier duty, but it seems like the travel is longer and it engages when almost 2/3 the way out. The GT is softer, shorter, and engages about 1/3 of the way out.
:?: :?: :?: :?:

I know there are many different shape of clutch cable "cams" but I have never looked up under the dash (yet) to see what shape they are.

:D Learned to drive stick at age 12.(i`m 62 now)My Father taught me in his 1949 Chevy Suburban. Now that was a learning experience.
