THE CLUTCH WON'T HOLD THE 75 SHOT

Hey guys! Went racing last night, first two qualifying runs went really well, used the 50 shot and the car ran a 14.11 ET, later in the night I switched to the 75 shot and the clutch was slipping all the time, 1st and 2nd gear it would hold but when I shifted to 3rd and 4th it would slip really bad, tried adjusting it but it didn;t do any good, guess it was already too burned...oh well, time to look for a new set-up....I sure wish I had an auto right now... :(

Alex,

Does Centerforce make a clutch that would fit yours?? Supposedly, the more RPM's you pull, the harder it grips :D :D

That would be easier to swap than a C-4!

I have (or had) a 8.5" clutch disc from RAM, is the same disc used in the 4 cyl Mustangs, I guess I'll have to upgrade to the six puck sintered bronze style, also 8.5"....

 WTG on the 14.11 with the 50 shot Alex! What tranny do you have now?

I call it the "toploader impostor", it's one of those 3+1 OD....
I should've ran all day with the 50 shot, it was amazing, you could feel the g's as the car accelerated from a stop....very, very similar I would say, to a friends modified 5.0, y'know when you feel the acceleration in the belly and your eyes and head, well I can't explain it really well, but you get the idea....now all I have to to do is try to find a new clutch disc..... :?

Alex

Hey that is a nice clutch disk. I know u said something about taking the pressure plate to a shop to put stronger spring put in, is their any thing else they said they could do?

Kstang, the only "problem" I have right now is that there are no aftermarket parts for the recessed flywheel, the RAM 6000 series disc is made of sintered bronze pads, these pads are really agressive on the flywheel and the pressure plate, I'm worried that they won't hold....OTOH if you had the bigger 9" flywheel you could get better components from McLeod or RAM....but you would need a 66 or later block, bellhousing, etc....

Alex

Yeah, I also have the 8.5 resessed flywheel, so i am in the same boat as you. I am just trying to figure out what steps other people are doing that 6000 cluch disk does look very aggresseve.

Centreforce clutches are used in 202 cube Aussie Holden L6's with 8.6" clutches without too much bother. The Toyota light truck stuff is also an option. The Cortina in my profile runs a Toyota HiLux clutch plate with a Ford pressure plate.

Centreforce stuff can be a bit wonky on the balance side, and it pays to use a blanket or scattershield. Weights on the Centreforce pressure plate are okay if your not seeing 6500 rpm. Some catagoires ban them unless used with steel flywheels.

Any more than 5500 rpm, and I'd be looking for a better flywheel. With giggle gas, your finish line rpm and maximum power revs should be lower. With 75 shot, you'd most likely be in the next gear, and should be short shifting well under the previous rev-range with 50 shot. More gas lowers the peak power rpm. Less rpm helps suppress clutch slip if the surface of the flywheel is score free. One trick is the brake cleaner in the throw-out bearing hole at 3000 rpm. Use a long tube, and do some mild clutch dumps. The crap often centrfuges out, and gives you a better clutch surface. Last resort, but may help you out.
