the correct temp

Okay, this will be a bit out there but I wanted some opinions and perspectives on controlling my temp.

setup:
2 speed 17inch electric fan
ECM temp guage
mech temp guage

problem on temp sensors... I'll need one for each, possibly 2 for the fan.

So I am going ECM route, a nice 2bbl throttle body and GM ECM, this will control the timing so I'll send in my DUI to be refitted to a 7pin. it needs it's own temp sensor, this I am planning on plugging into the back of the cyl head. here it will get the most acurate temp for the engine so it can tune accordingly. IMO this is the ideal spot.

mech temp guage, this is currently plugged into the back of the head, I'll be moving this to the t-stat housing, this is a more constant temp as the t-stat keeps it at 195*. and this is for my input to see if I'm overheating, so I must have this guage working.

Fan temps...currently I control high via a switch in my dash, and this method is hazardous... I want to control high and low automaticly without me in the process, but I have used all my temp spots that are tapped in... so I'll have to use hose sensors, either at the top or the bottom. For this is my dilema, I am thinking the bottom radaitor hose, this I want to feed the engine a constant temp. as the top is constant and no way to cool it down I fear it would be constantly on, where as the bottom hose will go up and down and does quite often. now, what temp should I aim to come out the bottom? If I'm feeding the radaitor with 195* water, and wish it to cool enough so that when I come to a stop light it kicks the low fan on when needed. then when it's hotter with the AC the low is already on and it's still geting hotter it kicks on the high.


What is the correct temp to feed the engine? the lower radiator hose should be around what degree for low? then what degree for high?
I am thinking high will kick on 10* warmer than low did, that will ensure consistancy. would I be safe with a 180* low and a 190* high? or 170-180?
on all temp controllers they all turn off 10* lower than the turn on point.

is there a better way?

the ECM (1) can control temp, but it can't be changed, stock temp control is @ 220* which is way too hot for my comfort. ECM (2) can not control temp, and I have a good feeling that this ECM will be a finer tune in the end.
 
Could you have a temp sensor bung welded into the radiator? That way the sensor could be more accurate for the fan? What ECM are you using?
 
The reason I ask what ECM you are using is because i know that Megasquirt with a relay board can control a whole slough of electric doo-dads including electric fans
 
the radiator is alum... would hate to take it out anyways...

I'm actually either going hose insert, or radiator probe and place it near or as near as possible to the lower outlet.

this controller is $131... would work great as it's a single unit and single adjustments are very nice...

this price is $116 and it does the same as the above, just more ugly, little more pain to setup.

as it's a 2speed fan, it does not care which turns on first, the low setting draws 17.4amps, the high setting draws 23.5amps... either route would be good, I'm leaning towards derale. except the last controler I got from them died, no it wasn't this one but a different cheaper single controled one, think I lost bout $50 when it died.
