the battery died in the EF so i took the new one i had in the XA and since changing the batterys over, the EF is running like crap, rough idle, the auto is shifting funny (which isnt as bad now) and fuel economy has gone to crap since too...... what has happened?? the car is going in for a service in a couple of weeks but still would like an idea of whats happened.............please help!!!

thanks

How long's it been on the different battery? Is it charging? Did you jump start it at all, during the initial period of trouble?

Seriously, first place I'd look is the alternator. Then check all your spark firings (plugs and leads). Then check the fuel pump. But it really sounds like not igniting, to me.

the problem was instant when i changed batterys. Didnt jump start it as it died at home, all i did was swap the batterys over.
The old battery was one from the nrma and it had 7/96 date on it so its had a good life.

The more i drive the car (as i need to get around) the better it is getting tho, maybe just the computer going through its settings etc???

seen a few of these cars go through "COIL PACKS" they just burn out and then have a constant miss usualy on number 5.not saying thats whats wrong but maybe.

i will mention that to the mechanic and see whats happens. Unfortunatly i cant do really anything to the car myself as its under warrenty for 12months

EEC-V resets itself when it has no power. Did you change the battery over within minutes, or did you change it over within a few hours?

sounds like the computer is adjusting itself to a motor and transmission with a few kay's on it..

no did the swap in like 5minutes, in and out

car has just under 150,000km on it........ maybe i should dissconnect the power again and leave it be for a few hrs?

I seem to recall something when i had my EB that for something to do with the computer you had to hold the revs around 1500rpm for it to go through its settings??? cant fully remember now

does the eec-v have a like a reset time period perhaps?

I've never had an EFI Ford, but you have to do a similar thing with the commodore V6s to reset the idle control valve. It also stores data specific to the current running of the engine to account for wear/etc.

I recently stripped down the throttle body on my wifes VT, and it took a couple of days to start running properly after. I'm guessing the data on current engine condition took that long to flush from the ECUs memory.

i went and talked to the mechanic and he said this is a common thing and advised me to disconnect the battery again and leave it for around 10min, then reconnect it and let it idle for a few mins then take it for a drive how i would normally drive it.

Well did that and when i let it idle it was all over the place, up and down, rough then smooth. when it seemed to settle a bit (after about 10min of idleing) i took it for a drive with stops and starts and letting it shift through the gears then back down...... it seemed to work and is shifting a lot better but still has a slight rough idle and when i put it in power mode and got some speed up i noticed a slight ping so timing maybe out.

I goes for its 150000km service next week which includes diagnostic and tune up so hopefully problem solved then

will keep you posted
