The saga continues...Now harmonic balancer is broken...

Hello, I managed to get my timing chain switched out. The new chain is WAY tighter so that is good. By the way the oil slinger was in backwards so that may account for the weird wear paterns on the gears. Must not have been getting enough oil?

Anyhooo...so I'm all happy, I have the timing cover back on and I'm sliding the harmonic balancer back on thinking to myself "looks like I'm gonna be able to fire this baby up today (Keep in mind car still has mystery problem to fix)!...NOPE..as I am very gently tapping the harmonic balancer on with a rubber hammer (just enough to get the bolt to thread) I see a little piece of metal fall. Wonder what that could be? ...Well it is a chunk off the balancer. Neat huh? See pics

Can I use this one? There is a bolt that holds the piece in.

Do I need a new one?If so is damper doctor the best (see least expensive) choice?

This is a 2 pully one. I only need one pully. Will this come apart? The part I need is still good...

Also, as an added bonus I had a HELL of a time getting the distributor in. The last one basically fell in. Not this one. I had to sand the base just to get it to fit in the hole at all then it would not go down no matter what. I moved cam gears, I turned rotor, I sanded base, I cussed at it. I think I actaully over sanded it???

Finally after about 2 hours I got it to go. Complete ...PIA. Then I decided to pull it out and check it out a little thinking it would go right back as long as I did not move anything...WRONG. Would not go back?! Finally, after another hour+ it went back. Complete nightmare.

It is official, the car gods do not like anymore... ... But, I will push forward...the saga continues...Sorry if this turned into a rant. I hope you guys can feel my pain.....At this point it is actually funny!!

well it came apart but it doesn't look like the crank bolt will work. Here's a pic of the front. I need something there?

What am I missing?

the washer goes in the step area. you'll need a new crank bolt.

i'd consider bolting it back together. the bolt will hold in the broken part.
i'm not sure if those two pulleys were balanced together. maybe someone will chime in.

if you put it back together, line it up the same way it was.

I forgot how big the crank bolt washer is. That looks like it will work as long as there is no balance issue. I can get a new bolt easy enough.

Could it be crisis averted? I could use a break.

So, am I good as far as balance goes?

THanks!!

That part was, I bet, cracked before you tapped it.

I suspect that whoever last put it on over-torqued it and cracked it.

Oops! I just noticed. You may want to put a repair sleeve on that balancer. (Not a big deal.) It's got a pretty good groove where it meets the seal. The sleeve will let the seal do a better job of keeping oil in the engine! :)

Thanks for pointing out the need for a repair sleeve. I'm tempted to not do it, BUT, then of course it would leak and I would probably have to take the timing cover off and replace the rubber seal in there also!

I hope to not ever take that cover off again. I can't get a sleeve until tomorrow but I will wait.

At least I don't need a new balancer...
