throttle response problem

I just gave up trying to put a header on that i bought off of ebay after two days of trying to make it fit i gave up and put the stock manifold back on i took it for a quick cruse and found that when i hit the gas it boggs down for a second and then kicks in it diddnt do this before i tried the header, any ideas of what could be wrong???? One of my friends is telling me its because there is a lack of backpressure because i cut a good chunk of the exhaust tube off


Does anyone make a header that slips in with out taking anything apart???

try putting it in from the bottom, and cutting off a piece of exhaust pipe wont cause it to bog down. backpressure isn't necessary, nor is it good. you need velocity for exhaust scavenging, not packpressure.

sounds like your accelerator pump quit working. i had hte linkage for mine fall off once. that's the usual symptom of it's failure. check it before dumping money on it.

Look for it on your carb. Most are externally operated, and may leak around their gasket (about 1¼" square, on the carb side). Remove the air cleaner housing, and with the motor off, manually pull on the throttle rod while looking right down the carb throat.

You should see a small squirt of fuel from the sid of the carb bore.

As to header fitment - just posting once should get you the answers. I have noted a number of brands only seem to fit wth the head removed at first... It is harder for people in Australia though, as ours have to clear the steering box also. Other people will remove or undo the front motor mounts and jack the block up or sideways for increased clearance during the install.

Your friend probably means well, but he is uninformed in his "backpressure" comments.

Also make sure you didnt knock off, pinch, or damage a vacuum line (especially the one to the distributor).

I always have to r&r my starter to get the header in. Getting to all the bolts, both on the header and the starter, is no picnic, either. I also had to shorten the stud (for power) on the starter. But it fits, and is well worth the effort.
