timing and idle question

Hello I have a question regarding the timing and idle on my 65 mustang. I recently swapped the carbutretor for a used and somewhat worn out Holley 7448 ( i have a Demon 2bbl waiting to be put on, but i wanted to get the car running and tuned so that it doesnt accidentally destroy my shiny new Demon.) Anyways i already have the DUI installed and i got the car started and it ran fairly well, but the idle seems too high. So my question is, what should the idle speed be? It is about 800 right now and the car is a manual 3spd. Also what is good timing for this combo? 14*BTDC?

Thank you very much in advance.

12* is pretty good, 14* may work better. Make sure that the choke wasn't on at high idle at all (stuck choke). Bring the idle down as far as you can (550 in neutral or something for manual). You're going to have to re-idle it with the new carb, obviously. You may even have to retime it. If you can get it ballparked and know that the timing is correct, swap carbs, and get to tuning. =D
