hey guys,

Installed a new vacume advance today and i am having problems still. Before it ran now it dont. Im pritty sure its in my timing so i decided to start from scratch. Pulled the distribitor benched it and did the vacume advance put it back in so that the rotor is hitting the cap to fire on cylinder one. still no fire.. Its getting fuel and spark. i am going to re do it all again so my question is whats the easyest way to put cylinder 1 at TDC on an intake stroke so that i can install my dist. or am i doing it wrong, been along time sence i delt with timeing issues. also i noticed when its cranking over that there is electricity jumping on the coil from the negative to the dist wire. I am very confused can u guys lend me a hand. Thanks

Return to basics. Youve got good spark now its just a matter of makeing sure it comes at the right time and has fuel and compression. I assume that this engine was running before so most possible issues go away. I would suggest you do the following.

1. Pull all the spark plugs.

2. Pull The valve cover.

3. Rotate the engine clock wise by hand watching the valves.

4. When the intake valve closes you should be on the compression stroke.

5. Ignition should come within 1/2 crank rotation after the intake valve closes.

6. Rotate the crake 1/2 crank rotation to what should be about Top Dead Center. Check to see if your timing marks line up.

6. Pull the distributor cap off and note where the reluctor (or points) and rotor are pointing.

7. Ajust the distributor clockwise until the ruluctor is just starting to hit the pickup coil (or points are just starting to open) and note the position of the rotor.

8. Put the distributor cap back on and attach the number one spark plug wire to the spot on the distributor cap that the rotor was pointing to.

9. Atach the rest of the spark plug wires clockwise in the proper order.

10. Reinstall the spark plugs, prime the carb and give it a try.

This should get you started. Once started you can fine tune the timing.
