Timing Marks

When I line up the timing mark on the balancer with the TDC on the timing tab my rotor points just past the number 5 terminal on the dizzy. Is this right? I tried to set the timing and I noticed that the timing mark on the balancer is almost at the 12 o'clock position. I did this with the vac advance unhooked, again is that right. I have not had an old car in years so I have a lot to learn. Any help would be way cool.

Turn the engine until the markings are around 10 degrees before TDC.
The dizzy should be pointing at number 1 lead (or number 6, if cylinder 1 is on exhaust stroke).

That's usually a good starting point for starting an engine, after you'd need a timing light to time it accurately.

Thank you so much for your response. I am going to time the engine again tonite. I do have another question. The dizzy has two vacuum ports, the one on the very end goes to the middle carb. (I have 3 carbs). The port closest to the dizzy cap is not hooked up to anything? Where should I run that vacuum line to?

Sorry, I can't help you there, I have an Aussie crossflow with a Bosch dizzy.

Have a look at the sticky posts in this forum- I think you may find your answers there.

Nothing. It is for Vacuum retard, not advance. It isn't needed.

thank you all for your input. as soon as i can figure out how to load pics on here I will post a few of my car.

If you cannot get the timing mark to line and coincide with the rotor pointing to the #1 post during one of the crankshaft revolutions, you may either have a distributor that is not installed properly, or the ring and timing mark on the harmonic balancer may have slipped.
First see if you can get it to line up on one of the crank revolutions.
