I need to run a everyday driver with a 200 cid and the single barrel carb. I think it is a 1100 with the auto choke. I need to set the timing so it will run good or as it should, no racing. and what should I set the auto choke to or at. I have tried to re set it a couple of ways but all seems wrong. I set the auto choke to with the engine cold push the throttle all the way down and release. I set the auto choke to just about closed. The timing right now is at 4 deg. Help

For the choke with the engine cold and not running after you stroke the throttle it should be totally closed. (I dont remember if you have to stroke the throttle, i may just have qjets on the brain at the moment). When the engine first fires the vacuum pulls it open that first little bit. That little bit is set by what is usually a plastic nut on a rod. After that its just a matter of rotating the black cap to get it to stay 'choked' long enough but not too long. At idle the only way to tell how its doing is by how long it stays on the high idle. Driving you have to feel for any stumble. It can be a back and fourth thing. Try to only make slight adjustments each time and remember what the symptoms were so you can figure out if you are going the right way. Most of the time for me it takes 3 or 4 tries to get it right. Another thing is to check and make sure the choke coil is actually hooked to the crank in the housing. It could have been put together wrong or has broken. Also make sure your tube is properly connected to the manifold. If you have the cap or tube off and see signs of black carbon you have a cracked manifold or bad gasket and its sucking exhaust in which causes all sorts of problems including the choke not to work.

I will have to play with the choke some. Now it stumbles just starting. The hole in the manifold was closed up a long time ago because they put a manual choke on it. I ran the tube down to the manifold to pickup some of the hot or heat from it and hoping it will rise through it. Now I will just have to try and get right. There is no choke coil. It is all manual auto choke without the wire. I hope that doesn't make any difference. Tom

Manual without the wire? You need some way to move the mechanism, that can be the air heated coil, an electrical coil, or one of the kits with a cable that goes into the cab that you control manually.

There would be no reason to block the hole in the manifold, its just a through hole. If exhaust comes out the hole the manifold is cracked and at some point will become a problem. You can buy kits that include a little box that clamps on the exhaust pipe that does the same thing. You will have to replace the black cap with the coil in it and make sure the vacuum passage is clear going into the carb.

My manifold was cracked/baked through at that little hole so I tapped it and put in a bold top and bottom to plug it.

You do have to get some way to pull the choke all the way off. The spring serves electric or thermal. Otherwise, go back to the manual choke.

I did the same thing when I had it off. I drilled holes and tapped them. Of which that gives me an idea to drill a hole through the bolt the same size of the tube and install the tube into the hole drilled. That should bring everything back into perspective. Thanks Tom

My manifold isn't cracked. Just the hole was drilled out and a bolt put in top and bottom.
