Turbo on somewhat tired block

Im just wonderin about my turbo project. I am realizing how my block may be gettin tired, old, but I dont have alot of money to throw around. If I took it apart to rebuild it, I would have to put off the turbo project even more. It runs fine, has some leaks that Im going to take care of but I was wondering if runnin the turbo at a MAX of 10psi would hurt it any. I would like to get the turbo on and rebuild the block later, its got about 80,000 miles on it, so not too bad for a 66. If I need to rebuild the bottom end, how much am I lookin at spending? Any info and ideas would be appreciated!

mate just run it til it blow's!!!

get it running, drive it round, save ur cash whilst you are driving it, when it blows then re-build it.

the bueaty of this is you can sort out all the gremlins on the old engine, before you install a fresh engine.

grab a spare block/crank etc... and build it up whilst you are driving.

i am a firm beliver in the train of thought that goes like this-

boost dosnt kill engine's- rpm and detonation do!!.

cheers.joe.

Joe's right, Matt. Boost by itself doesn't hurt engines. It's detonation and high RPM that beat them to death. Mount your turbo, get it tuned and enjoy massive low end thrust.

Oh yeah, it prolly won't take 10 PSI boost, but even 6 or 7 will make a huge difference to your seat-mounted dyno... ;)

Temperature's rising. I feel another case of "boost fever" coming on. 'Can't wait 'til Christmas to start reading "Turbochargers" & "Maximum Boost".

I can't get comfortable with boosting my current high CR (10+) 300. I'm going back to my old post on big cam'd turbo and dig into the alky/water injection...

66... I had a shop do all the machine work & round up the parts. Then I assembled the engine myself. That ran about $1500, but included all new bearings, gaskets, pistons, rings, cam, lifters, pushrods & machine work (bore, balance, turn crank, valve job). I'll give them a call, I am planning to do the same block work anyway.

How about $725? That's a fresh quote on boil, check, freeze plugs, cam bearings, bore, turn crank, ballance, check and r & r rods - hang new dished forged pistons, zero deck, rings, bearings, gaskets...a ready to assemble turbo short block (minus cam/lifters). That's from Heads By Paul - a very reputable performance machine shop here...

The turbo will probably quicken the death of your engine (though not just from boost, but more likely from the hard driven because of the addition HP making you drive it harder for fun).

But think about it. Your turbo set up will transfer to another block. Getting another 200 is pretty cheap. Most people are giving them away.

Build the turbo. When the engine dies, replace it.

You guys are awesome, and I cant think of a better way to lay this motor to rest, lol. It has served me well for many years so why not let it go out while in its prime (power wise that is). I will go with this, I still need to rebuild my tranny and get my oil leak out of the way but once that happens (and christmas shopping is out of the way) I will start savin for the turbo project, hopefully I will have all I need by the end of the summer!
