Turbo vs. Super

At these speeds, even the slight lag of a turbo might be an issue (even between shifts),

You have no idea what you are talking about.

Recipe to go fast:
1) C4 trans with full manual valve body, transbrake and proper torque converter
2) whatever engine combo yopu want to bolt to the front of it
3) good suspension and tires.

If going really fast at the digs is the ultimate goal you won't even consider a manual trans
Once you stage, you set the transbrake and hold the gas on the floor. Let go of the button when you want to leave and hang the hell on.

On a good launch I could have been in the 12's on a 1 bbl carb. I have about $1200 in my entire car. The only thing keeping me out of the 12's was I didn't have a transbrake (or a more expensive trque converter).

That's the thing: IF you have an automatic, lag may not be an issue. However, most people I know have turbo/manual or supercharger/automatic. It's just as I put it: most people who go turbo around here do it to go the riceburner path, while supercharged people go the hotrodding way.

You're just an exception

Turbochargers are just the natural evolution in boosting. Even big diesels use turbochargers instead of superchargers or turbocharger&supercharger. It's just the fact that the supercharger behaves like an extention to the motor (which it is) that makes it so appealing.

EDIT: Just read Az's post... D'OH! lol a lot better way of putting it. lol

Actually, that response was to Mustang Boy who is talking drag ONLY, not street.

It doesn't matter if its an automatic or a manual on the street, when you are rolling is a WHOLE 'nother story than sitting staged on the line. There are ways to get off the line in a furious explosion of power whether automatic or manual (t-brake with auto, MSD 2-step witth manual)

On the street, is there some turbo lag....yes. Is it much?? no, not really! The people who cry the loudest about "well, turbos have lag!" have obviously never driven a car with one. You can nail the gas and start counting if you like, but you won't get very far before its spooled. Then HANG ON!

Also, on the street, A loose converter will get you into spool faster, but then, so will shifting into a lower gear on a manual. If you still run a "severely-outdated-and-will-break-and-the-mere-mention-of-"boost" old school, non-synchro 1st gear 3-speed trans, then get the parts ready for a T-5 swap anyways.

I haved always loved the short lived boost on a stick car. side step the clutch at 4000rpm and about 10 feet out of the hole you have nearly full boost. helps get the car rolling on street tires (they will squal bad but not go up in a cloud of smoke) and once they hook you are gone! my 84 TC would pull hole shots on 5.0L all day long (this was like 8 years ago) with nothing more than an intercooler injectors and the boost turned up

A friend of mine has a 5-speed 2.3 Mustang LX ('88) with mostly all stock parts and very little money spent on it, he's running low 12's! Gotta love those 2.3s...

Which brings me to another subject while I am at it,
and this is INTENDED to ruffle some feathers:

If you plan to have a performance (boosted) car, you have NO GOOD REASON to keep the old 3 speed.
Swap in a 5 speed. Period.

No real arguments here. The strength alone is a great incentive. I'd think that the earlier one especially would be a the weakest drivetrain part.

thanx for all of the replies guys and as u can see from my sig i already have a WC t-5 and ditched the 3spd after only driving the car once so ill prbably go with an auto and ill probably figure out a way to get a powerglide 2spd to attach to the 200 seeing as i can have alot of help making it strong cause that is the only tranny my uncle uses in his drag cars

is your 200 a Big bell? if it is there is an adaptor that allows the use of A Chevy trans on a SBF ( Big Bell ) bolt pattern, everything would have to be custom for the small bell. in all reality a well built C4 with a full manual valve body, trans brake, the works would be better than a 1.82 2spd powerglide.

'Glides are at their best on very, very light cars with proportionally large HP. If you're building an altered go with the 'Glide; in a full bodied Mustang with a six, no matter how radically built, stick with the C4.

EXACTLY

thanks for the tranny input and i have a small bell 200 and i think i have finally found the route im gonna take with the stang but i will still build an I6 drag car but it would be with a fiberglass body fastback with a 250 with a turbo and nitrous and lots of other mods

 But...but I love my old three-in-the-tree, and that shifter is closer to my drink/beer holder at the dash. How long has it been since you rested your right wrist, while cruising, on the column shift lever in third? Uh-huh, now that's driving!
