hey everyone. got my 64 f100 runnin. purrs like a kitten. have any of you had probelms with ,after shutting off the motor and let it sit for like ten minutes, having to floor the gas pedal to get it started? is it flooding the motor?
also, my truck came with the hd radiator and i replaced it with a standard, will that make it run warm? i put in new coolant and thermostat(180 degree).

My 62' has the same size radiator as the V-8, If that is HD I don't know, but mine has never ran hot. Mine doesn't have the flooding problem you described, My 78' does though. I've never been able to figure that one out. What carb do you have? congrats. on gettin her running

see, from my understanding, the hd rad is widerby three inches, and it's the ford motorcraft 1100load o matic. you think it's just flooding?have you guys found newly made floats for these carbs that work with the newr blended fuels?

Yeah, my rad. is extrem. wide. flooding would be my guess but there are others here with far greater knowledge than me. Seems like all these old carbs. have their own quirks. I have a holley 2043 runs great but doesn't like heavy traffic, when I get out of traffic it wants to hesitate for a couple of seconds then it runs fine, but np probs. on a hot restart.

Its helpful first of all to install a glass fuel bowl on your float chamber (Holley 1904 1bbl carb) so you can see how your float is operating. You may have a bad float. I had a freshly rebuilt one here that had a float full of gas so it sat on the bottom and allowed gas to keep flooding in.
After checking your float to confirm it is good, I recommend lowering it a little below the factory setting. The float should set perfectly horizontal in the chamber in the full up position if it is set properly at the rebuild shop. I have mine set lower than that so the gas only reaches half-way up the glass bowl. You can drive it wide open that way and it wont run out of gas if the carb has the factory jet installed.
My 223 has a new dual action vac & fuel pump. Like most it delivers about 5 lbs fuel pressure. Thats too much pressure for the Holley to handle. It will actually push gas forcing the inlet needle down and submerge the float unless its regulated. I installed a cheap regulator from advance auto parts and set it down to about 1.5 lbs at idle speed.
Never a problem with flooding again. While doing all this, I removed the carb and studs, installed longer studs and 6 carb gaskets under the carb to help keep heat from boiling the gas in the idle-fuel chamber. Ever since then, no problem with vapor-locking. If the pic below wasnt so fuzzy, you would be able to see how I installed my regulator.

Dave, I think a 1901 is similar to my 2043, where do you find a glass bowl? looking at a rebuild drwg. it looks the same, at least that part. Thanks

The Holley 1904 and several other similar carbs can be fitted with the same glass fuel bowl at the float chamber.
You can purchase the glass bowl new from Joblot automotive in Queens village new york. They have a toll free order number but I forgot what it is. Go to www.joblotauto.com to get it.
The Glass bowl is part #EAA-9559 and it costs $7.50

It will be necessary to get the 4 clamps and mounting ring from somewhere else as they do not sell those parts.
I installed a new cork gasket and a second gasket I cut out from gasket material to increase the depth of the gasket so that the glass bowl will not cause the float to hang up on the inside after the 4 clamp screws are tightened as needed. It works fine this way and does not leak gas.

I just finished putting my second Holley 1904 with glass bowl together as a backup carb using one of Joblots glass bowls and clamping arrangement from a bad donor core. This is a NOS carb complete with the Ford-O-Matic dashpot actuator. Its a beauty. Sorry, its not for sale.

i don't have a holley. i have the morotcrap 1100 i do believe.

I dont know what a motorcraft 1100 looks like. I have only seen holleys on 223's. The 272 Y-block intake would accept Ford, Carter and Holley carburators which were all nearly identical except for a few differing features and all used the same rebuild kit. I'd be able to tell whether or not a holley glass bowl would interchange on a motorcraft carb if I saw one for comparison.
I am running my cooling system without a thermostat year round. The block was rodded out, flushed out with acid and runs like a faucet when you open the petcock on the block. It is still cooled with the original 3-blade fan. The temp seems okay, but I doubt I'll ever put in a thermostat. She warms up pretty quickly without it in warm weather. Takes about 10 minutes longer in winter to warm up.
