im looking to v8 swap my 1967 mustang inline 6 engine to a bigger v8 engine. Whats the most budget friendly, easiest way and engine to do this with? What parts do I need to upgrade and swap out? Any suggestions would be appreciated on how to attack this project. Thanks

This is well documented over on the Vintage Mustang Forum. People will debate which engine is best/cheapest, but the parts list is there for the items you'll need to pick up like suspension components.

The cheapest high horse power, best handling, would an all aluminum junkyard LS with twin China turbos. Would have to go struts and gut shock towers to fit.
P.S I am just kidding that would be blasphemy.

any run of the mill 302/C4 combo swap from 60's-90's P/U , Victoria , most any Ford, Merc', etc will make your Mustang run of the mill' ....

Don't know what you have now but also price out the front and back suspension, brakes, radiator, driveline, differential, transmission? may not if you have a c4, wheels if you have 4 lug now, tires of course, and that is all I can think of now.

Get a 2000 mercury mountaineer sport 2wd. Use all the driveline and computer. Cheapest and easiest way to get it all.
GT40 motor. 4 speed auto trans. 8.8 rear end. You will also need engine mounts from a 68 falcon v8. A crossmember made for the trans. V8 front end parts and disc brake conversion. Master cylinder for 4 wheel disc brakes. A radiator. Get the computer recoded and a bunch of other cutting and welding stuff. New wheels, gas tank and fuel pump. Cost is around 4k plus what you pay for the mountaineer if you do most of the work yourself.
Take half that money and put it into a 200 and turbo and you will have a better performing and lighter vehicle.
The v8 is 120 pounds heavier than the L6.
I have one built and it’s been on the road 2 years. It goes like a rocket and gets good mpg on long cruises along the interstate. Took 3 years to complete the build. Getting the computer done took 6 months. Disc brake front end cost more than the mountaineer but it’s a major improvement and I am going to put the same disc brakes on my falcon that I am building with a turbo boosted 200 six.

@Tmacdagreat, I saw some of your earlier posts about your car. You’ve got the 5-lug front disc setup already and I suspect you have the V8 differential too so aside from the engine, it’s just a matter of motor mounts, transmission crossmember and drive shaft, plus wiring harness and throttle linkage. If it were my car, I’d put my money into boosting and fuel injecting the inline 6 you have with the right transmission and rear end and getting a great power to weight ratio but that’s me and it’s not what you’re asking.

Easiest swap would be a carbureted 289/302. You need a motor, transmission, crossmember and drive shaft (get a Ford Explorer, aluminum drive shaft. It should bolt right in with the right Yoke and u-joints. You also need the correct motor mounts and transmission crossmember and mount. If you get it from a wrecked 60’s/70’s Ford it should install smoothly and the only question is the driveshaft and engine bay wiring. I did a lot of swaps like this in the mid-80’s and it isn’t rocket science.

When you look at modern powertrains from newer cars, it gets more complex because of fuel injection and engine management so maybe a smaller step in the modern direction would be a Sniper fuel injection system. It involved some fuel line plumbing and electronics but it’s less complex than trying to retrofit a modern drive train computer into your 60’s muscle car.

Anyway, food for thought. It’s only going to take planning, time and money.

Cheers,
Andrew
