What kind of odd engine is this?

I picked up wht I thought was a 200 I6 but didn't have my casting codes with me then. I went by the 5 freeze plugs, 3 bolt water pump to identify it. When I get it home it has casting number C_OE (No second digit at all) the head has casting number C3DE-D. Is this a 4 main 200? What year and is it of any use other as a boat anchor?

Not sure on the block, IIRC only 250 used 4 bolt water pump.

If the head is original could even be a 144 or 170. IIRC first year for the 200 was 1965. I think first year for a 170 was 1963.

IIRC the 144 is kinda rare these days so my guess is on a 170.

Howdy Harvey and All:

What a lovely mystery!!! We have evidence of 200 blocks appearing as early as 1962 in the Fairlane mid-compact line. The casting was C2OE-6015-C. It was a 4 main crank.

The '63 & '64 model years of Fairlanes showed up with a 4 main 200, casting codes C3DE and C4DE. The first 7 main 200s begin to appear in the '64 model year in Fairlanes and '65 models of the Falcon, Comet and Mustang with a C5DE - H castings. All we've seen, so far, have been 7 main, 5 frost plugs.

It is very difficult to be definitive in this time period (Probably any period with FoMoCo). Changes don't seem to follow dates, codes or guides.

Harvey, you've found a very interesting piece. Please explore it and share your findings.

Adios, David
