What Now?

Ive owned my 70 stang (250ci) for about 4 years now but have never had the money to do to it what I would like. Now that I am a little older and making better money I am trying to get an idea of which upgrades would be best and in which order. I've just about decided on some things (exhaust, cam, ignition) but I am still a little confused as to what style intake to go with. I know that it is farely simple to switch to a 2bbl or 4bbl carb with an adapter, at least i think it is. but from the little that i know about these motors it seems that it may still suffer fromn some air/fuel mixture problems. I was considering looking into triple single bbl carbs, i just dont know if this would be cost effective and/or reliable. any suggestions would be very appreciated.

how about a good upgrade. get the new Classic inlines head when it comes out, 1.6 adjustable roller rockers, a DUI distributor, a light cam, and top the engine off with EFI, you take care of the A/F problems the engine suffers with the EFI, you take care of the engine being choked by the log head with the new head and, ignite that good A/F ratio with a good high energy spark, using the DUI distributor and a light cam to make it all work togther.

Do you have an estimate on what that kind of buildup might cost. I have a feeling it may be more than what my budget will allow.

Ha, yeah probably alot more, i'm definetly waiting to see how much the new head will cost. So far i've been very surprised with how low the prices are for stuff here (the good price is why i will eventually get a header for my falcon) so who knows it could be not that bad after all considering. The biggest cost would probably be EFI, cause you need the computer and all that. I'd stick with a carb though, cause i would think that the new head would allow for better mixtures for air to fuel.

thats exactly what I was thinking. I do plan to stick with the carb, but one thing I dont know is which would be better considering performance and price, a 2bbl swap or triple singles. I want to get the best bang for my buck but I dont want a setup that is so complicated that Im goin to spend more time working on it than driving it.

Mike told me that the new head will be in the ballpark of $1,500. yes with EFI you would need a controller but Megasquirt II is $400 assembled, $80 more for an assembled relay board ( don't 'need' it but it is recommended ). but then you have the wiring harness, sensors and the Throttle body.

man, you guys are really, and i mean really dedicated. I dont think i could ever justify it to put 1,500 for a head for my straight six. I guess my reasoning is that even with the crossflow head, you'll still need to turbocharge it to get up to a tuned v8s category. Oh well to each thier own , you guys work hard for your money, spend it how you want, so you enjoy it. Well ok i take it back, if i had alot of money i would definetly build up the six, but budget wise its just not there.

a set of good aluminum heads for a SBF are right around $1,500 there's not much diffrence in price. depends on what a " tuned " V8 makes in HP. a 250 with the Classic Inlines head could push 300 HP N/A, the log heads is the only restriction in the small 6, taking that away opens up a lot of HP, and then the stock exhaust becomes a restriction, and headders should be added for optimum performance. not really that expensive really. if more power was nessasary, a turbo could be added, and get respectable 400 hp or so on low boost.

I uderstand, I go to car shows and see these huge v-8 poking out of the hood that look just like the one next to it, niced and chromed up from parts you can get at autozone. What I want is the inline to look and sound awsome, different, thats why i'm rebuilding the six. When Car guys walk past my car I want them to say WOW

I go to cruise in's sometimes w/my mach 1, don't even lift the hood. They already know what the engine looks like :roll:

Eventually, I do entend to put the new head on my motor, but not any time in the very near future, btw is thereany kind of release date on that head yet? I also plan on putting a turbo into the equation but again not any time real soon. Right now I think Im just goin to go with a 500cfm 2bbl, a DUI distributer, a nice streetable cam, and some long tube headers.

I'd start a little more reasonable:

1) Electronic Ignition (either DS2 or Pertronix 1)
2) Carb upgrade
3) Cam Upgrade

Then, basically, your limiting factor for power is the head. You'll either need another head (Argie, Aussie, or Mike's) or some serious work to the log head. Offy 3x1's look killer, give a very nice HP upgrade, but won't suck up $1500 for a head upgrade. I put my Offy together for around $600 total. HP for your money, Offy is the best major upgrade you can get in my opinion.

I agree, the thing that Im am worried about with the Offy setup is reliability. Being someone with somewhat limited mechanical experience, Im worried about getting into a situation where I end up working on the car more than driving it. This may just be my ignorence showing but the offy setup seems a little complicated.

500 cfm is probably too big. Check with some of the other carb guys, but I think they were recomending a 350- 450 cfm units. the log head just can't move the much air..
