whats wrong? need quick answer!!!

im driving home on the freeway with my brother and we were riding along listening to some bumps when all of the sudden my engine noise went from normal to wack...it start clacking...thats the best way i described it...i pulled over and popped the hood...off the carb and saw that the butterfly of teh carb was sticking wide open...the sound i believe is coming from the carb or maybe inside the valve cover...i cant pinpoint the area...sound is quiet loud...i was able to drive home but i need to get this fixed soon...if its something i can do i need a answer if not i have to wait til monday to take it to my shop...can it be a broken carb?...loose rockers? i have no clue im just so new to stuff like this...gary

most likely an exhaust leak or a loose rocker

the manifold to the exhaust pipe is the main source of leakage, to check if there's a loose rocker you can pull off the valve cover and do a visual inspection, and try to see if they'll move by hand

i'd say oil problem, but you said it was sudden, if it's neither of the problems listed above id check the oil pump out

The butterfly that you describe on the carburetor, is it the upper or lower butterfly? The upper one is the choke and is supposed to be open when the engine is warm. As for the clacking sound, it could be a loose rocker, but if it was sudden and very loud I would suspect an exhaust leak. Pulling the valve cover to inspect the rockers is pretty simple. A loose carburetor usually doesn't make loud noises, just poor performance.

Exhuast manifold leaks are often mistaken for bad lifters, rockers etc. Check the manifold for cracks, check the gasket for bad sections.

Try this. get the inner cardboard tube from a roll of paper towels. Get two if needed and tape them together. Run the engine and with the tube to your ear, go around the engine. That will help pinpoint the sounds.

i just got it checked out and it was an exhaust leak...the donut flange connecting the manifold to exhaust was leaking slightly and my manifold itself was leaking due to a blown manifold gasket...the manifold is warped and i have to get it resurfaced...total for parts and labor 185...aint that a female dog! and i just got the 400$ gift certificate but i need it fixed now...dang...headers will have to wait a while so i can cherish the manifold im paying more money on...lol...gary

Slow down a bit. Forget remilling your stock exhaust manifold. It will probably shatter when you drop it, which means it will fragment in a milling jig. Plus, the thing is going to be warped anyway, showing a light curve. If it is not cracked beyond patching, get a new seal and crank it back on slowly, starting in the center and working around the thing in a circular order. Don't yank it down all at once. Seat it in over a couple of passes. Use something to keep the bolts from backing out, like bolt clamps or Locktite or something. Run it untill warm and retorque, again in a circular order, from the center of the manifold outwards, one bolt on one side and the opposite bolt on the other side of the center. If this doesn't work (meaning if it breaks), get a new casting from one of the Mustang parts houses (like NPD real close to you) for $125-140. Or you can get one from the boneyard for somewhere less than that.
I dropped my original exhaust manifold. It broke in half, being punky and all. I got a used one, complete with curvature, directly from a used block here locally and did the above. It worked fine until I got the tuned header.

well i went to the shop and found out that after the fixing of teh gaskets and manifold that the problem was still there but not as bad...have to wait til tomorrow they said...no!!! not in some other persons garage...my poor car...hehehe...it better get fixed and not cost too much...shes my means of transportation...gary

OMG!!! the block is cracked...they tested for leaks by using dye to find the leaks...removed starter and cranked it manually...from there they found out that it was "spewing" oil out the side...what the heck...i just had my motor fully rebuilt no longer than 2 years ago and i didnt put much more than 15,000 miles on the car...this just sucks...

That's a bummer man. My engine just recently had a bit of an accident too. The 3rd piston broke at the wrist pin and put a hole in the block. What luck. Did your rebuild have a warranty? Or did you do it yourself?

my warranty just expired...but i went over to the shop today and gave them some words about what happened...they told me to then take my car to the place that rebuilt my engine...the 185$ for the manifold and other stuff he said i didnt have to pay for and that any other work that they need to do theyll do for free but just charge for the any partts that need to be replaced...sounds alright that i dont have to pay for any labor on that side of the fix...well i goto the engine shop...they were very nice and looked at the problem and told me that it doesnt look like a cracked block at all and then these block dont break...if anything the head will crack but he ruled that out...they told me that it might just be a blown head gasket or if they need they would mill the head down because they found the leak in between the head and block...(itys really loud...harley but in a very irratating way)...took make a long story short they said taht since its been fully rebuilt 2 years ago and my car had put less than 10g's on it that they do all parts and labor for free...so this is a free fix!!! and i got a new manifold that prolly wasnt warped when i first bought the car anyways...crosses fingers...gary
