which distributor to go with

I'm pulling the engine and starting to do work to my car. It's a 1968 Mustang with the 200 6. Which distributor will b best to run, the D.U.I. from the site or a duraspark II?

I'm still not convinced that the DUI is more than a very well-built and well-curved HEI (a good curve is the key to a lot of things)

I like the Duraspark with a small cap - way cheaper / available, looks like a points dizzy, and you can use it to trigger a Ford module, a GM HEI module, or an MSD box.

I'm using a Dura Spark II from a 78 Fairmont, new from Auto Zone, with the MSD6 control box and it works great.

The new distributor, cap, adaptor, rotor, wires and MSD6 all came to about $300 so it's a little cheaper. If you go junk yard route or if you connected via a Dura Spark or GM control module you could do it for much cheaper and still have a very effective ignition.

Mike Raley claims excellent horsepower additions from the change to the DUI from the same set-up as mine though so if your looking for performance the extra cost for the horsepower gained is worth it.

If I hadn't already went with the new Dura Spark and MSD I would go with the DUI.

But does the DUI dizzy take the place of the MSD unit is the question?

Otherwise, if the MSD is still needed then the DSII is still the more economical choice.

I really like everything that I have read about the DUI dizzy, it is just that for me the price is too high to justify when I have so many other things that need attention.

The DUI is not multiple spark like a Duraspark with MSD, if that's what you are asking. With the coil on distributor design, I'm not sure if you can hook an MSD box up to a DUI. I've had some experience with DUI distributors (none of it bad), but I prefer multiple spark systems because nothing makes a car start faster or smooths out a rough cold idle like a multiple spark.

I am using the Duraspark II powered by a HEI Module along with a MSD Blaster II coil. I have roughly $250.00 in my setup. This includes the cost of the new custom recurved Distributor, cap/rotor/wires, coil and HEI module.

Yup, you can use a GM HEI-type dizzy to trigger to fire any MSD-type box and get multiple sparks, but you have to lose the HEI module, which I'm sure is a big part of the whole DUI 'package'.

You'd be trading the one, long spark for a bunch of short, multiple sparks.

Which is better? Darned good question, which is why I'd REALLY like to see a comparison of the effectiveness of multispark vs. single-spark ignitions, with everything else either controlled for or optimized to the system - ignition curves, coils, plugs, etc.

Nope, DS1 and DS2 are both single-spark, afaik no car maker ever put in a multispark ignition (but nearly all racers do...)

ok, so one more question...single or dual vaccum? '68 mustang w/ a 200
