200 - 250 swap

Don't know what's all wrong, could be a lot, might not be. Haven't even dropped the oil pan yet and don't really know what I'm looking for. Never got that deep before but I'm anxious to learn. After removing the head, I found the damaged piston, so that's one thing. Also, after I had the engine out and removed the head, it rained that night. Stupid me covered every thing up but the engine when I knocked off for the night. Figuring I'm replacing the engine anyway, I haven't bothered. Interestingly, 4 out 6 six cyliners had water in 'em. #6 was at the top of the block (should it stick up above the block slightly?) but #4, the one that keeps oil fouling the plug, had NO water in the cylinder. Rings needed in that one, obviously, and if you do one, might as well do 'em all. She smokes a little too. I figure the head's probably OK, just seals needed, but with around 250K miles on the motor, a damaged piston, and bad rings, it needs a full rebuild. If you're going to rebuild the bottom end, might as well rebuild the top end, right? And if you're going to do that, why not pump it up a notch or two, right? Then, the testosterone started flowing, the heart started racing............So, you see, my daughter's car, which she needs to drive to school and work, was looking like it was going to be down for a while and get expensive to "fix". So, I pick up a decent salvage engine, I hope, make a couple of things pretty, and get her up and running in a week or two. And..........it happens to leave a fully intact, rebuildable 200 block, head, manifolds, carburetor, etc. just "laying around" that I get to play with! :) This gets my daughter rolling, my wife's happy because I'm getting out "cheap" and I get a new toy to play with! WIN WIN WIN!

Not meaning to nitpick, but did any Fairmont/Zephyrs come with a 250 I6?

Werent they all 200's same as the 79 1/2 to 1982 I6 Mustang/Capri's?

I know Granada/Monarch's could have a 250 I6 but IIRC they are front sump and use the old Mustang style motor mounts.

I do know know of any Fox body Lincolns coming with a I6. Some had V6's but most were 5.0L's IIRC.

EDIT: According to one source a 2.4L I6 diesel was offered but I doubt this was what was in mind.

If the salvage yard engine dosen't pan out, I have a 200 short block out of a '71 Maverick that has 73,000 on it and ran great when removed. Just put your head and oil pan on it and go... I'd let it go for $100 as is, or I can assemble it and test run it for $200. The engine is right up the road from you near Blue Ridge.

No offense taken, Anlushac, and I appreciate the info. I'm by no means an expert on what came in when. As long as we're being honest, I can't tell one engine from another without pictures and clues. I rely on what I'm told and it's already bit me once on this project. I guess I'll find out Monday or Tuesday.

Hey, Jamie, thanks for the offer. If this engine doesn't pan out, I'll be back in touch with you on that. I'd need it reassembled 'cause I ain't been there yet and don't know if I'd get it right or not. In case you're looking, the 250 I bought, then took back, was at United Auto Parts in Buford. It looked clean, didn't appear to have any oil leaks or damage, although one of the tabs on the head was broken and jury rigged to hold the exhaust manifold on. The power steering pump was damaged, looks like it might have been hit in the front. And, by the way, I had a '70 LWB pickup stolen from me in Ellijay last April. I had spent a week under the hood working on it and test drove it to Walmart. When I came back out from shopping, it was gone. By the security video, he took it 15 mins. after I parked it. I was heart broken, she was my pet project. Looked like crap but ran great. A friend swears he saw it a few weeks ago on 515 between Ellijay and Blue Ridge. So, watch out, somebody in our neck of the woods has a taste for old Fords.

And, if anybody's looking, I got in touch with a guy yesterday who has a 170 with a 2spd "shift o matic"(?) tranny out of a '63 Falcon he needs to unload quick. Says the motor runs great and the tranny shifts perfectly. He bought 2 Falcons to build one. Drove it home from Texas. Wanted this one for the body, apparently.

Man, that sucks! I have three '67-'72 trucks. A '68 F100, '69 F100 Ranger XLT, and a '71 F250. My grandpa and I have over 45 old Fords sitting in a field. I actually live down in Suwanee in Gwinnett, but my grandparents and other family live in Culberson, NC near Murphy. I travel up and down 515 through Jasper, Ellijay and Blue Ridge three or four times a month in my red '72 Maverick.

Make sure you lock it up! I had the keys in my pocket. Just caught a glimpse of him on the security cam, not enough for an ID. He rounded the back end of the truck and it was backing out 3 mins. later. Hot wired it and drove off in no time. Obviously, he knew what he came for and knew what he was doing. Video was lousy so we couldn't get a good enough look at him. Then a friend of mine swears he saw it on the road outside of Ellijay and he knows me and my truck well enough that if he says it was my truck I believe him. Had a distinctive home made grill. The guy hadn't even repainted it! Sooner or later, he'll get stopped and if they run the VIN, he'll get caught and I might get her back. I reported her stolen thru the county, city, DMV and my insurance company. But the cops aren't concerned because it wasn't a Lexus or a Beamer. :x No theft insurance, just minimum liability coverage. After all......"Who'd steal this piece of junk?" Famous last words.

Actually, I think the top was originally brown. What you see in the picture is black primer. The previous owner ripped the vinyl and chrome off and had it sitting out under some trees for about 4 years. Didn't even sand the glue off. I sanded for hours to get the top smooth enough and then bondo'd the holes where the chrome was and shot it with some black primer I had handy, to make it presentable enough for my daughter to drive. You're right about the rest of it though. White interior's in good shape except 1 tear on the driver's seat, wear from getting in and out, and 1 crack on the dashboard. Carpets shot and interior vinyl panels started to get chalky. Anybody got any clues on that? You can scrape the vinyl off like peeling paint and it turns to dust. Can it be sanded (would remove the textured look) or will they have to be replaced? The Ghia door panels are fairly unique with a raised padded panel, Ghia logo emblem and carpet on the bottom. Had a pouch on 'em too but they were shot so I ripped 'em off. I don't think I can get them aftermarket. I can get regular panels from California Mustang but not the Ghia's, I don't think.

Before sanding it try washing well with Dawn's dishwashing detergent to remove any grease, oils, dirt, etc.

The go get a bottle of Megauirs plastic restorer stuff. IIRC its in their Classic line.

If that doesnt work you can sand or scotch brite it and then call someone like Metro Mustang and order a can of white interior paint that matches your interior color code.

BTW I have a 81 T-top coupe with no a/c and 200 I6. Good to see another notchback inliner Fox body

Thanks. Fox bodies are getting scarce in my neck of the woods. Probably going to change the color on the interior. Teenagers and white upholstery don't make a good combination. The brown's gotta go too. Thinking black on black although my daughter wants a royal purple. Shopping list:

left front fender
both doors
front bumper cover
dash pad
glove box door
all interior upholstery and carpet
outside left front marker light
misc vinyl pieces (seat belt, running board, etc.)
heater and a/c control panel (it's scratched up)
maybe door panels if I can save 'em
headliner
total paint and dye job on the inside
rear deck carpet/vinyl
stereo
and the little clip that holds the map light closed so it'll turn off. It's a cool option and a great light but with the clip missing, I had to pull the bulb to shut it off.

I'm taking out the a/c too. I'll never fix it and it's cluttering the engine compartment. Besides, 70mph with both windows down and the tunes blasting makes for a great road trip!

I just noticed something yesterday. On another topic, somebody mentioned that the #6 cylinder TDC was the same as the #2 cylinder (maybe it was #1) just on the opposite stroke, or something like that. As I was looking at my old engine, #6 is at TDC but all the others are lower in the block with #1 being about 1/3 of the way down the cylinder. If what I read before is true, I think I found my problem, huh? I'm not digging into my old engine until the new one's in and my baby's running.

Yep, definitely dropped a rod. I was cleaning up the engine compartment and painting it (yes, spray can  ) and walked by the block sitting there by the car. I was looking at the marks in the top of the piston and reached down to feel how deep and the piston just dropped about 2 inches. Reckon the rods broke?

yeah, curious about the marring on top of the piston though. i can't figure out what caused it. valves aren't nicked or scarred and i didn't find any pieces of rings or anything. i'll take some pics and see what ya'll think. if it bumped the head a few times, there's no evidence. bottom of head looks untouched. interesting.

on a positive note, picked up my new (salvage) engine today. will start prepping it for install in the morning. new gaskets, seals, clean, paint, etc. probably won't get it dropped in until next week though.

The new (salvage) 200 is in. Here's how it wound up....

Took the engine down to block with head intact (and valve cover). Left old dist, fuel pump, etc. on to plug holes. Pressure wash, degrease and spray "Old Ford Blue". All brackets, etc. got gloss black.

Clean and painted engine compartment gloss black.

Replaced oil pump, pan gasket, valve cover gasket, new timing gear set, thermostat. Fuel pump and dist were less than a year old from the old engine, just cleaned 'em. head looked ok. stem seals ok and valves working fine.

changed trans filter and pan gasket and adjusted bands.

reinstalled alt and new power steering pump and line to gear box (p/s hadn't worked in months.

to go...finish buckling down and connecting trans. carburetor (also < a year old), and new dist cap, rotor, wires and plugs. reloom electrical and replace fuel lines, vacuum lines, heater hoses, etc. a/c went to the dump. paint and install radiator and fan. new batt cables, solenoid, voltage reg. ign contr < 6 mos. old. add oil/fluids. fresh filters all around. new pcv, caps and lines and new chrome breather.

start and time

anybody know where to get breather adapters from 2V/4V to 1V carbs?

Most people cut the bottom of their factory 1v air filter housing to fit inside the bottom of the 2v/4v housing, then either rivet, silicone, or let the hold down bolt hold it all together.

so how's it run out?

actually, I need it the other way around. I'm keeping the old Holley #1946 1bbl for now and my old breather is split all around the top edge. I want to get a chrome, open element style but they're all for 2 and 4 bbl carbs. I think my seat is more like 2-3".
